Commercial Description:
Deep ruby red ale. Extreme malty/caramel flavor; sweet up front, finishing with hop bitterness and aroma. Very complex beer. We recommend at least four more months of age. But it is a delight to drink now.

Batch 2 - brewed 8/1/2004
Batch 3 - brewed 2/16/2005
Batch 4 - brewed end of Dec. 2005 (part of this batch was bourbon-aged)

From a 12oz Bottle. Murky, tobacco brown pour with a quickly dissipating layer of thin cream head. Very English malty fruit aromas of sherried raisins, strawberry cream, and some sweetened pineapple syrup. Full bodied, softly carbonated mouthfeel. Very caramelized dark fruit flavors with some heavy woody caramelized malts, fig skins, a touch of black cherry, and a hint of apple pipe tobacco. A slightly darker, more resiny tobacco chocolate flavor lingers on the palate with a hint of oxidation and hoppy spice. Pleasant, lingering final smack that allows me to continue enjoying the flavor profile long after the last sip.

Sweet sugar currant malt amalgamation of raisin, cream and fragrant yeast. Light fruitcake spice and aged rum. Candied papaya and other fruits. Colored with clouded pale mahogany with deep ruby-brown core and sunset fringes. Rim of off-white. A quiet silky smooth palate of fresh creamy raisins and loads of tawny caramel malts. A highlight of fresh black cardamon pods over the yeast character. A background of tooth-biting hop flavor rallied around a lemon kiss in the middle of the tongue. Sweet mexican cocoa powder and heavy british toffees with faint buttermilk arise from the middle. Alcohol alights the sinuses, however gently. Beautifully malt flavors. A touch cloying and clingly. Dark sugars fringes edge towards a hint of medicine notes, which keep this from excelling. But, the dry chocolate and faint coffee highlights are especially appreciated. Faint oxidation.

Poursa cloudy brown hue with a halo of a head. Aged for almost 2 years, this brew had little carbonation. Aromas of caramel, butterscotch a little hay. Flavors of the same with a light rum and well hidden alcohol.

Bottle from footbalm. Bottle date 2-16-05. This beer looked very good, burgundy color with no head or carbonation. Rich, bready, strong alcohol, very sweet, sugary, and gritty. Man, I really wanted to like this beer, but I found myself struggling to the finish line. Had a weird aftertaste that I can’t put my finger on. Oh yeah, also got some strange beet flavor.

Courtesy of Shadey. Bottled 8/1/04. Dark brown/amber/ruby. Thin layer of off white film. Looks dangerous. Smells fucking nice. Huge caramel/toffee lightly toasted malt, resinous hops, dried dark fruits, yeast like heavy bread, subtle marshmallow like sweetness, complex. Same flavors with an indescribable depth. A touch of warmth in the finish. Huge body, smooth with just enough carbonation. Damn fine brew.

Columbus 2.0 tasting shared by me. Poured a dark brown color with a little tan head. Aroma had chocolate, caramel, toffee, and a bunch of other stuff. Flavor was little bready and very rich and smooth. Solid beer.

12oz bottle, brewed 02/16/05. Via trade with HogTownHarry. Thanks, Harry! Pours an off-white head, dark reddish-brown appearance; minimal retention and lacing. Plenty of piney hops in the aroma, maple syrup and an alcoholic tinge. Full, sugary mouthfeel, showing chewy dried fruits, maple syrup, caramel and candy sugar, resigned hop profile; malt-dominated, at this age. Long, sweet-malt finish. This seems like it would be exceedingly hoppy and piney young; pretty fantastic right now.

Very good brew here. The fourth dementia pours a nice deep brown color with a tan head. The aroma is hefty--full of malt, caramel, molasses, tobacco, and raisins. The flavor follows that profile--very big and complex, with a perfect mouthfeel. Not a ton of alcohol feel for an 11% brew.
