| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Apr 16, 2006 Bottle (12oz). via trade with Pailhead - thanks, man!. Poured hazy mahogany with a smallish off-white head. Lush aroma of woody light roast malt, yeast, alcohol, tangerine and juniper berries with some funky herbal almost peppery hops - really nice. Taste follows, tangerine juice and zest too, big hit of warming alcohol, spicily yeasty, fresh, juicy mallt - remarkably quick off the tongue. Mouthfeel is sticky, lightly acidic and carbonated - a classy old ale, you need to respect it - I loved it. CMUBEERMAN (415), Madison, Wisconsin, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Mar 29, 2006 Bottled aug 04, thanks to styles for this one. Pours a great looking bronze...not to much head...some better looking head would have made it a 5. Aroma is intensely malty, sweet and sour sauce, and you can smell the bit of hops in the distance...very similar to some of the barley wines I’ve encountered. Wow...that flavor is cutting...very much like a barley wine...and similar to the HotD old ale I’ve had. Very malty, heavy caramel cream sweetness, some sour citrus, some drying hops...not too much bitterness though. Touches of various kinds of alcohol balance well with the array of earthy qualities this brew has. Greatly complex...but still manageable. Mouthfeel is smooth, but also sticky and oily...not quite syrupy though, which is good. I dig this beer...it is kind a big...but friendly at the same time. HomesickAlien (20), Michigan, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Mar 20, 2006 Pours clear, dark ruby/brown. Thin beige head dissipates quickly. Aromas of caramel, dark fruits, alcohol, molasses, and honey. Flavor matches aroma with a hint of wood, maple syrup, a nice hoppy bite and some warmth from the alcohol in the finish. Very sweet and very complex. Mouthfeel is viscous and syrupy. It coats the inside of your mouth leaving a sticky film on the lips but the subtle carbonation prevents it from becoming cloying. It’s dessert in a glass! This is oustanding stuff, I’m in love. I’m going to stock up on this one and see how she ages. apoptosis (1316), Long Island, New York, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Mar 2, 2006 Thick, dark, ominous aroma of deeply hopped, semi-caramelled and hotly full of alohol. Whoa. This is a heavy brew, for sure! Quite sweet, almost syrup, but very well-balanced in flavor/finish. Many fruits, figs, bits of dark chocolate. A healthy dose of hops - this is very much like a barleywine - and a very good barleywine. Yum! notalush (2692), Denver, Colorado, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Mar 2, 2006 Many thanks to Pailhead for this - my first Kuhnhenn experience, and it does not disappoint - very full nose, with vanilla, oak, prune, caramel, strong earthiness - nice, slick, oily mouthfeel - caramel, plum, some wood and whiskey - lighter fruity esters come in later - mostly raisin and cherry - hops and an oak-y, vinous character enter the finish, but they strangely seem to work together - one of the best old ales I’ve had - I’m anxious to see how this ages.
