Commercial Description:
Deep ruby red ale. Extreme malty/caramel flavor; sweet up front, finishing with hop bitterness and aroma. Very complex beer. We recommend at least four more months of age. But it is a delight to drink now.
Batch 1 - brewed late 2003, draught only.
Batch 2 - brewed 8/1/2004
Batch 3 - brewed 2/16/2005
Batch 4 - brewed end of Dec. 2005 (part of this batch was bourbon-aged)

Sampled at the Michigan Winter Beer Fest, Lansing. Murky orange-brown body, thin off-white head. Raisiny, caramely aroma leading to a sweet, heavy malt body with layered breads, raisin, and caramels. Warming and full-bodied. Rich. Another winner from Kuhnhenn.

Deep, opaque brown-mahogany with a tiny hint of a head. Aroma is intense and complex, with sweet malts, caramel, and some dark fruit. Flavor is very sweet, but not cloying, with notes of wood, whisky, alcohol, and slight hints of smoke and vanilla. Thick, slightly syrupy mouthfeel with lower carbonation, and a very nice combo of malts, bitterness and alcohol in the finish. This one was brewed on 2-16-05, and I drank it on 2-9-06. I’d like to try one that is aged longer. Overall a very good sipping beer.

This was a good beer but I don’t quite find it to be as amazing as some reviews tend to make it. Still worth a shot.

12/14/2005, 8/2004 bottle from Sully. I had trouble with this beer. Alcohol presence was very apparent, and the thick, vineous palate was a little overwhelming. The aroma was nice, with some raisins, sweetness, malt, and a similar flavor, but it was just too hard to drink. 8/3/6/3/3.5

Rerate April 2008: I wish I’d taken notes for this this time around. Tap at Hop Devil Grill, batch 4. This was downright awesome. The hops and malts were perfectly merged, with a delicious fruitiness, full and rich nose, and perfect body. Downright chuggable. One of the most drinkable high grav beers I’ve had. 8/4/8/5/4.2.

Thanks to the ratebeerian that brought this to pizza port’s strong ale fest last night. A delicious malty ale with earthy overtones. Tawny flavors, burdock root? Interesting and tasty.

12oz bottle via trade with SuIIy - Thanks Mike! Pours a nice dark mahogony color with a creamy tan head that dissipates rather quickly. Aroma of sweet caramel malts, brown sugar, and raisins. Flavor includes caramel, raisins, alcohol, some yeast and a little cherry. Palate is full bodied. Not real carbonated. Feels nice in the mouth. Very nice brew. Does Kuhnhenn make any that aren’t?
