Commercial Description:
Deep ruby red ale. Extreme malty/caramel flavor; sweet up front, finishing with hop bitterness and aroma. Very complex beer. We recommend at least four more months of age. But it is a delight to drink now.
Batch 1 - brewed late 2003, draught only.
Batch 2 - brewed 8/1/2004
Batch 3 - brewed 2/16/2005
Batch 4 - brewed end of Dec. 2005 (part of this batch was bourbon-aged)

I had this at the 2005 Strong Ale Fest at Pizza Port Carlsbad. Thanks to beeryum for bringing a bottle to share. It’s a dark brown pour with sweet (brown sugar-ish) flavors and a dry finish.

Bottled 8/1/04. thanks to MullMan for this bottle. Poura deep amber, with a small, tan head. Aromas are sweet malt, brown sugar, alcohol, and bread. Flavors are brown sugar/caramel, hops, sweet malt, and some fruit. this would be interesting to try with a couple of more years aging.

Thanks to SuIIy. 12 oz. bottle from 8/01/04. Dark mahogany with no head at all. Aroma was very sweet with molasses and caramel. Flavor was also sweet and very very malty. Caramel carries through as does the molasses. Add some black cherry and currant and some spice too. What a great beer.

Thanks JCW. A very nice burnished mahojony color, clear, with a well-sustained, tan head. Aroma of cream from a grass fed cow, spicy alcohol, toasted white bread, and caramelized sugar. All of the aroma components are in the flavor (me like) plus warming alcohol, a delectable, sweet density, and caramel that is best described as a melted Werthers Original. WOW.

bright & clear reddish copper color, short foamy/slightly creamy tan head that goes pretty quickly. deep malt aroma that is sweet and vinuous, like raisins soaked in sherry and rum. flavor is like a belgian barley wine - malty and a little sweet but sharp too. some bourbon, some raisin, then just a little hop bitterness and a bit salty in the finish. pretty sticky. very enjoyable "hybrid style", thanks to Styles for this bottle!

This is an excellent old ale. Aroma is somewhat similar to Old Foghorn, with smells of old leaves & branches, tea, figs, and a slight alcohol bite. Flavor is very sweet almost syrupy. Mouth feel is thick like syrup. Finish is dominated by sweetness, but there is a dryness up front from the alcohol and a slight tartness in the finish from the hops. Thanks Chris Styles!

Bottled 8-1-04, best by 2010, compliments of Styles. Deep magnificent ruby brown and clear, with little to no head or movement anywhere in the snifter. Very aromatic - cherry sauce, grenadine syrup, maple sugar, cedar, sweet figs and juniper berries. Flavor delivers. Sweet maple and black cherry conjectures. Vinous composure with added brown sugar for dimension. Alcohol is detectable in the slightest of senses. Saffron and lavender seem to take the malt make-up into a sweet hops resonance. Thick, smooth and liquid velvet on the palate, with a finish reminiscent of brandy, then makes a quick sweet statement, and ultimately finishes very dry at the outset. Bravo.

12oz - botlled 08/2004 - thanks Pailhead - Aroma is very malty, carmel, toffee, and molasses. Poured a deep brown with a small ring for head and decent lacing. Flavor is sweet carmel with some carmel on top. A bit of raisin, molasses, and toffee but mostly carmel. It hides the alcohol very well. Palate is smooth and creamy. A different and interesting brew.
