Poured a dark effervescent ruby with a small off-white head that dissipated completely. Aroma is an interesting tapestry of molasses, caramel, hops, alcohol, and raisins. Taste is sticky and sweet, with notes of molasses, grassy hops, and cinnamon. There’s a hugely aggressive alcohol burn to the finish, but I’m enjoying it. Somewhat reminiscent of a strong, slightly hoppy bock... hmm... Liberator? radiomgb (2068), Peterborough, Ontario, Canada
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Sep 14, 2005 Bottle. Deep brown in colour, thin beige head, some lingering lace. The aroma was woody, some caramel malt, toffee, slightly sweet, no noticable alcohol. The flavour had a toffee sweetness, some oak and vanilla, light alcohol and brown sugar. Slick mouthfeel, medium body, mild carbonation. Finishes with a mild bitterness, slightly dry. Nice. shadey (1501), Rochester, New York, USA

| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 2/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Aug 31, 2005 Bottle Pours a murky redish brown with hardly any head and thin sheeting lacing. Rich caramel, sweet woody and apple aromas with a slight hint of alcohol. I totally agree with Degarth. Meaty, carmely and not as sweet as I expected. Very much like a BW but not as hoppy. Thick heavy almost chewey and a healthy ABV taste is noticeable. A little spice but more soft old wood barrels and sweet carmelized sugars. Interesting.

| 2.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 3/5 | 4/10 | 5/5 | 9/20 | Aug 28, 2005 Updated: Mar 8, 2008Courtesy of Pailhead I think! Sweet caramel, toffee and malt aroma with a meaty kind of bouliion note as well. Ruby brown with no head at all. More of that meaty almost gamy character I associate with barley wines. Caramel and cheap chocolate flavors as well. Very mellow I get no spiciness as others have noted. Perhaps my bottle is aged. How is this not a Barley Wine. It feels and tastes very Barely Wine-like to me. Viscous and flat is how I would sum this up and without a whole lot of flavor. DavidP (1743), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Aug 21, 2005 ’05 GTMW sample. Hazy amber body. Sweet malty aroma with green hops. No tart woody notes as expected. The flavor brings in more tart "old" elements - chocolately start before caramel sweetness with a tart, hoppy finish. Philip (436), Illinois, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Aug 14, 2005 Sampled at the Great Taste of the Midwest, 8/13/2005. This was the very first beer I sampled at the festival, and thus, perhaps my most detailed rating. The comment on extreme malt and caramel is an understatement. This is rich stuff with lots of oak flavors blended with other dark notes of molasses and toffee. I also picked up some subtle notes of orange on the palate, but orange as in Grand Marnier orange. Taken together, it reminded me of an Australian Muscat, a rich and sweet dessert wine that resembles port and sherry in some aspects. Would be nice to try it aged in bourbon barrels.
