Deep ruby red ale. Extreme malty/caramel flavor; sweet up front, finishing with hop bitterness and aroma. Very complex beer. We recommend at least four more months of age. But it is a delight to drink now.
Batch 1 - brewed late 2003, draught only.
Batch 2 - brewed 8/1/2004
Batch 3 - brewed 2/16/2005
Batch 4 - brewed end of Dec. 2005 (part of this batch was bourbon-aged)

Thanks explosivebeer! Jammy liquor, rich and super malty. Murky chestnut. Oaky, more raisin and syrup, never becomes cloying. Loved this beer.

Bottle - thanks dmschefke. Pours a deep caramel colored brown with a large beige head. Nose is sweet with citrus, kind of that faded citrus hops thing, caramel, and toffee. A sweet flavor is rich and syrupy with caramel and toffee sweets. Light citrus presence. A bit of chocolate too. Lots of sweetness going on here, but retains a nice blend and balance. Lingering fruity and floral hops into a warming finish. Quite excellent.

Bottle. [thank you, boutip]
Pours deep red with a super-nice, large, creamy beige head. Super lacings and a nice duration. Impressive aroma. Toasted caramel, chocolate, port, oak, vinious, liqourice, raisins and plums in fine balance. Soft, lowish carbonation, super oily mouthfeel. Flavour is sweet, vinious, some chocolate, raisins, port, toasted caramel, a touch of green apple, Belgian sugar. Light bitter finish with fine warming alcochol.

draft at brew kettle - Fairly hazy ruby red/deep brown color with tiny tan head that quickly dissapears without a trace. Aroma has brandy soaked raisens, raspberries, toasted oak, vanilla beans, red grapes, rich caramel backbone, lots of chewy malts, bit toasty, hint of cherries, very faint roastyness. Flavor has a ton of chey malts, heavy caramel, oak, hint of burbon, orange peel. Palate is thick, somewhat sticky. Finish is fairly sweet, falling short of cloying but not by much. A very nice, deep, brooding brew. I think this would be even better if it were more fully attenuated and finished a bit drier - but still it is great.

12 oz bottle from a trade with dmschefke. pours dark brown with almost no head. minimal carbonation. big malt aromas of leather, wood, dark fruit, burnt sugar. the flavour is nice up front with big chewy malt. its overly sweet and a little hot at this stage. not a bad brew but something that has its own time and place. thanks for the bottle dave!

[Bottle, thanks Guerde!] Pours hazy brownish-amber with a creamy beige head that refuses to go away. Aroma is prune, lemon zest, alcohol, Taste is decadent, with raisin, some black pepper, malt balancing it out towards the end, notes of caramel, chocolate and molasses. Mouthfeel is outstanding--thick, luscious, and beautiful. Fairly long, dry finish with malt quite evident. Wow, this gem is what keeps me hunting for new beers. Just outstanding. Could drink this all night long, and would love to try the barrel aged version. Thanks again, Guerde!

(bottle from kkearn) Pours a dark chestnut brown with a medium khaki head that retains well. Big aromas of plum, prunes, raisins, toffee, light hops, slight chocolate, candied nuts, and brown sugar. Taste is really strong of brown sugar, toffee, and raisins. Hint of vanilla as well. The taste just meshes very well, and the flavors combine into something great. The finish is lightly bitter and possesses a black tea like astringency that lasts well after drinking. Slight toasted note also. Palate is thick and rich, but not too heavy, with a nice smooth carbonation. The high ABV is very quiet in this. Wow, this is nothing short of amazing. Thanks again Keith!
