Aroma is strong and sweet with molasses, raisins, toffee and caramel. Flavor is mostly the same, lots of toffee and dark fruits, a hint of vanilla, thick, creamy and sweet but not cloying. A little bit dusty and old tasting, but that’s good as this IS an Old Ale. A very big, malty, tasty beer. I want more! markwise (1200), 15 Minutes from Kuhnhenn in, Florida, USA

Nose is vanilla, raisin, dates, malt, figs, booze, whiskey, and candy sugar. Flavor is malt, caramel, dates, figs, toffee, candy sugar, raisins, and lots of depth. Malty start, sugary mid, and raisiny finish to this vanilla-laden medium-full bodied beer. bulldogp04 (7), Indianapolis, Indiana, USA does not count | 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Apr 5, 2009 Caramunich malt on the nose, as well as some dark fruit and maybe some molasses....Mouthfeel was nice and creamy and quite appropriate for the style...Nice little hop flavor, but not overbearing in any way- just enough to balance out the sweet malt and dark fruit flavors. Lots of caramel also comes through in the flavor. This one probably does great with age ! Hophead22 (1106), Redlands, by way of Wisconsin,, California, USA

App.: Clear, very deep mahogany, large light tan froth.
Aroma: Really deep and rich, lots of big sticky, fruity malts, somewhat minty, a bit of alcohol, biscuit, light warm spice, lots of black strap molasses, licorice, chocolate, vanilla, soy sauce, savoury brininess.
Palate: Medium-full body, moderately soft effervescence.
Flav.: Much like the nose, really sweet and sticky dark dried fruits, molasses, licorice, some of the soy sauce savoury/salty notes, burnt sugar, light vanilla and chocolate, some herbals and light mintiness; sweet and reasonably bitter with some of everything plus warming alcohol in the finish, lingers for a loooong time.
Huge beer, a little harsh, but it is forgiven! TaktikMTL (2786), Montréal-Nord, Quebec, Canada

Caramelly, sugary aroma. Slight bourbon flavor, with caramel and some furits. Some citrus hops in the background. Very complex, with bananas, apricots, tobacco, No apparently alcohol. | 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Feb 22, 2009 Bottle, 2007 Winter Solstice release. Pours a dark and dense, cloudy chocolate brown color. A frothy, bubbly, mocha colored head displays great retention, leaving a thick, milkshake-like wash of lace that mostly rejoins the body. Aromas are really rich and inviting. Bold caramel and nougat malt are accompanied by heaps of fig and oaky vanilla, with hints of rich cocoa malt and ground dark spices. Raisin playes a role, as do soft, fading, earthy hops. Flavors are incredibly well integrated. Cocoa moves towards the forefront, joining the caramel and nougat. Hints of hazelnut come through, working nicely with the oak and vanilla. Hops show more potent that those noes indicates, even at this age. Traces of cream tie everything together. Some unexpeced but welcomed coffee roast comes trough on the finish. The mouthfeel is lush and nearly full, transitioning from mild fruity sweetness to semi-dry and roasty. The alcohol is incredibly well hidden. I prefered the fresh Fifth Dementia by just a hair, but this is still a fantastic beer.
