Marsiblursi (1400), Göteborg, Sweden Aug 22, 2008 (Bottle thanks to hopscotch) Pours dark brown with red hints. Small sand colored head. The aroma is of caramel and chocolate malt alongside dark fruity tones of dark cherries and prunes. These sweet tones are well balanced by undertones of mild elder berries, juniper, mild lemony/grapefruity citrus and subtle tropical fruit hints of mango and pineapple. Hops also bring tones of wood and herbs. The flavour is vinous and malty with tones of caramel, milk chocolate and dark fruits like prunes and dark cherries. Bit tropical fruity with a nice alcohol warmth in the finish. Some hops are present with notes of mild citrus and fresh herbs. The mouthfeel is oily, chewy, light sticky, smooth and light velvety. Medium sweet, light bitter and light acidic. Bit peppery. The aftertaste is of syrup, brown sugar and light bitter hops. Near full-bodied. Beerman6686 (680), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 19, 2008 Poured a cloudy murky brown color with a small off white head. Aroma was a lot of caramel, dark fruits. Flavor was really complex, caramel, dates, figs, chocolate, sweet malts and alcohol. thickfreakness (55), Austin, Texas, USA Aug 18, 2008 Thanks to kmweaver for this bottle. Not sure of the vintage but the label is different from the one pictured here. Pours a dark, ruby-tinged brown with a half inch of light brown head that lasts for a bit and leaves some decent lacing. Burnt caramel, rum-soaked figs and raisins, more alcohol and sweet fresh fruit smell. Taste is much of the same with dark caramel, figs, raisins, other fruit and a distinct hop bite in the finish. This one is big, syrupy and smooth. The alcohol is well hidden behind the intense flavors present here. A great old ale. xmarcnolanx (644), Kirkwood, Missouri, USA Aug 15, 2008 WOW.
Tap GTMW 2008
A few samples. The only beer I had more than one sample of at the fest.
Sweet fruit, dark caramel, some higher alcohol.
My notes say: Like gummy bears on crack.
This beer is very sweet and cloying in a totally pleasurable way.
I love this beer. tennisjoel (725), Shakopee, Minnesota, USA Aug 12, 2008 Sampled at the Great Taste of the Midwest 2008. Port like flavors. Cherries, vanilla, toffee. Dessert like beer, very rich and inviting. Like Rosie’s Old Ale, but a little more of a hop bite, which I prefer. Really excellent and well crafted beer here.
