muzzlehatch (4425), Burlington, Vermont, USA Nov 11, 2005 12 ounce bottle from Bellon Vino in Ann Arbor, MI (October 2005). Surprisingly thin head for any Belgian-style, half a finger in my tulip dying quickly to a thin ring, topping a murky, translucent dried-blood hued liquid....nose vinous, with burnt sugar/molasses notes, raisins and a bit of orange peel, fairly low-key but complex enough...lots of creamy banana-caramel-chocolate in the body, moderate wet yeastiness, more wine character, and a light sourdough breadiness that is more pronounced towards the rather sour finish...gently pleasant alcohol warming, appropriately full body and lively carbonation...better than the initial reaction led me to hope for, this is a fairly solid American dubbel, though far from the brewers’ best.
Lothore (226), California, USA May 31, 2008 A- Pours a cola brown hue with a small off white head. Still looks like there is quite a bit of carbonation for the age of this one.
S- Smells sweet with hints of dark fruits such as fig and has a citrusey character which is followed by belgian yeastiness.
T- Taste is much lighter than expected. Definite hints of citrus from the nose tie into the flavor along with sweet caramel notes that fade away to a long, lingering malt character. Alcohol at the end is more prominent as it warms.
M- Medium body with a good amount of carbonation.
D- This is another winner from kuhnhenn. I honestly can’t say what this one was like fresh but it seems to have aged very well. Very subtle and balanced. The alcohol is barely present in this one which is surprising considering the 9 percent abv. All in all I think I enjoyed the syrah nine a little better because it added another layer of complexity to this brew but the simplistic elegance of this one really works out in the long run. unclemattie (1568), Georgia, USA May 10, 2008 12oz bottle, Vintage 2005. It has aged well. Pours a brown color. Aroma of cherry, whiskey barrel. Flavor is of dark fruits, figs, and some molasses sweetness. JohnC (1740), Mission Viejo, California, USA Feb 7, 2008 POurs a murky reddish brown with a thin tan head. flavor has some dark & dried fruit.
