SuIIy (1109), W Newton, Massachusetts, USA May 8, 2005 On tap. Chocolate and coffee. Very malty. Dark brown w/ tan head. nose is chocolaty. Hints of apricot and plums on the palate. walleye (821), Sterling Heights, Michigan, USA Nov 16, 2004 from my favorite brewery. nitroblend.I had to have another beer waiting for this one to settle. poured dark brown to black, with a light tan head. aroma, citrus, chocolate, malts, hops. flavor was kind of disappointed with the flavor they were on the weak side, got caramels, chocolate, nuts, hops, as it warmed got some cherries. another good one. unibrouefan (121), Val-Des-Monts, Quebec, Canada Jun 11, 2006 Mondial de la Bière de Montréal; Black dark porter, aroma of coffee and chocolate. Taste is toffee with fruity tint. Good porter, but not in my top 3. arjoseph (555), Chicago, Illinois, USA Aug 2, 2005 On tap into a mug at the brewery, and in 12 oz. bottles in multiple containers. Once again, I’m going to give a Kuhnhenn beer one of it’s highest ratings. I guess I’m a groupie, even though I tried to be even more critical than usual (I didn’t just want to succumb to the Kuhnhenn hype). Thankfully, I found the hype deserved. Penetration Porter is almost opaque black with a nice beige foam head that diminishes to a generous coating and a ring with an attached frill of lace creeping up the side of the mug. The lacing is incredibly sticky as you drink with uniform patterns of small bubbles that don’t cascade at all when you level the glass. The racing is quick and shallow, but the lacing more than makes up for it. Chocolatey coffee roast smell, intense and fresh, smells better than some good stouts I’ve had (and I’ve had quite a few lately). Huge coffee roast flavor from the start settles into a semi-sweet chocolate finish that’s semi-dry and smooth. The finish takes a quantum leap to a drier state about 2 seconds after you swallow, and it’s phenomenal. It’s amazing how much flavor is carried on this medium body; the contrast between the body and the flavor intensity almost makes this seem light and refreshing. Also, there’s a nice level of nuttiness late, so that this seems to blend brown porter characteristics with baltic. Better on tap than in the bottle, and this rating is based mostly on the draught sample, but still damn good from the bottle. hopscotch (4485), Vero Beach, Florida, USA Apr 24, 2005 Draft... This beer rocks!... Pitch black ale (clear crimson when held up to bright light) with a small, creamy, off-white head. Great retention. Nose of light coffee and chocolate with a whiff of buttermilk and caramel. The flavor is all espresso, chocolate, caramel, burnt nuts and tangy hops. Medium-bodied with moderate carbonation. Roasty finish. World class English porter!
