Commercial Description:
The ice bock, also known as "Bayrisch Gefrorns", owes its discovery to a coincidence. According to the chronicles of the Kulmbacher brewery, some time around 1900 an apprentice forgot on a cold winter day to carry two barrels of bock beer into the brewery cellar. The barrels stayed outside, were covered by ice and snow and weren’t discovered until the following spring. The barrels had burst and the apprentice was reprimanded. But the carelessness was a stroke of luck because under the thick ice coat, a bock beer extract remained, strong tasting and high in alcoholic content.
Even if the dark, tasty speciality is not produced in this spectacular way anymore, the chance that gave birth to this beer became a tradition. Today this beer rarity is brewed in a modern brewing and freezing process, but the incomparable taste is still the same and can always be enjoyed in winter months.

Bottle. Ruby brown, low golden brown layer. Toffee nose with a light herbal and wooden edge. Wooden start, caramel, chocolate, light nuts, tobacco, oranges, a hint berries. Fullbodied, slick mouthfeel. I tried a older bottle before and was surprised how badly it had aged.

Black with smaller head. Ginger coffee chocolate, vanilla malt caramel tangy sweetness. Decent amount of balance and character, a good tasty brew, a little quenching too. Nice, a good brew to try.

Shared this one w/ oldrtybastrd. Picked up at Maruhn Getränke in Darmstadt. Pours a dark reddish brown. Sweet caramel/roasty aroma, smells like blackstrap molasses. Roast malt/chocolate flavor with a touch of fruit and great alcohol bite in the finish..

33cl bottle. Cool label design: poured dark brown with a medium sized light brown head. Very rich aroma of caramel, figs, raisins, prunes, etc. Taste is very malty with all the dark fruits above. Starts off sweet and finishes nicely bitter albeit mild. Undoubtedly Kulmbacher’s best beer.

Smells like prunes and caramel. Looks roasty brown with upper 2/3’s of glass too dark to see through. A well disguised wallop. A deep but roasty and dry flavor. Almost taste like a fuller bodied nut-brown. Not a favorite but decent. Just recently had something similar I liked better.

Bottle shared by footbalm, thanks man. Pours a cloudy toffee color with a medium tan head. The aroma is very sweet; almost like a Barley Wine; sweet candies and tons of rich malts. The flavor was quite interesting; loads of rich and intense malt, a ton of dusty dryness leaving your palate really quickly. Not too hot, just a bit of alcohol warmth. A bit of yeast and caramel also. Pretty damn good and interesting.

Dark brown pour with a brown hued frothy big head. Aroma of malt with a hint of yeast. Really big malt flavor with some alcohol evident. Reminds me of rum cake with raisons and plums. Nice balance while (almost) keeping the alcohol in the background. I like it.
