Commercial Description:
The ice bock, also known as "Bayrisch Gefrorns", owes its discovery to a coincidence. According to the chronicles of the Kulmbacher brewery, some time around 1900 an apprentice forgot on a cold winter day to carry two barrels of bock beer into the brewery cellar. The barrels stayed outside, were covered by ice and snow and weren’t discovered until the following spring. The barrels had burst and the apprentice was reprimanded. But the carelessness was a stroke of luck because under the thick ice coat, a bock beer extract remained, strong tasting and high in alcoholic content.
Even if the dark, tasty speciality is not produced in this spectacular way anymore, the chance that gave birth to this beer became a tradition. Today this beer rarity is brewed in a modern brewing and freezing process, but the incomparable taste is still the same and can always be enjoyed in winter months.

1996 bottle consumed in 2007. Clear dark amber/brown body with a medium-sized tan head, fading. The nose lightly sweet and vinous with oxidized port, toffee and prunes. the flavor is lightly sweet with cherry, fruit punch, toffee and red grape skins. Medium/full body is very soft with light, gentle carbonation.

Bottle shared by mmtmatrix. Poured a deep brown color with a nice tan head. Aroma of chocolate malt and a slight fruitiness. Flavor consists of moderate chocolate, along with caramel and toffee and undertones of sweet fruit. Slight yeast flavor on the finish with a bit of alcohol coming through. Pretty nice body, and easy to drink for how much flavor it has. Definitely a nice beer.

33 cL bottle. Pours dark brown with a redish hue and a dense tan head. Dried fruity sweet aroma, distinct caramel malt too. Sweet raisin and plum flavour with a solid caramel malt sweetness. Toffee and mild fruit notes lingering into the finish. Alcohol can be sensed, but mainly through adding viscosity to the beer and not in the flavour. Holds a warming finish though.

Bottle. Dark brown pour with a small tan head that dissipates quickly. Roasted malt and sugary molasses on the nose. Molasses and chocolate in flavor. The alcohol is present but not too noticeable.

Bottle. This one is nice. All the richness of a great Imperial Stout, along with a rich bocky taste. Deep black-brown color, with minimal head. A great sipper, with a warming smooth chocolate aftertaste. Exceptional beer.

Bottle on 2/08/2008. Ours out a clear, deep ruby with a slowly receding tan head, bu little lace. Molasses, chocolate, vanilla, roasted nuts in an enticing aroma. Full body, rich and velvety mouthfeel with some stickiness and low carbonation. Full, round flavor with caramel dominating, and a touch of spicy bitterness, but not enough to hold back the sweet finish. A slow sipping brew, like a port after dinner.
