Braufan (1), Spokane, Washington, USA does not count Feb 8, 2008 Nice full, rich malty aroma, amber coloring, medium head with adequate lacing. Slightly sweet taste that mellows well with the high alcohol content for a smooth, warm aftertaste...a winter favorite . AmEricanbrew (1747), Louisiana, USA Feb 7, 2008 Dark brown with a fleeting tan head. Malty sweet smell of grapes and black licorice. Medium body with a slick mouthfeel. A very tasty taste mirrors the smell with black currants and molasses. Very easy drinking i could have pounded this beer. 6106 Beerlando (2284), Orlando, Florida, USA Feb 6, 2008 Pours a dark but transparent, inky purple-brown. A fizzy, foamy, off-white head settles quickly to a splotchy film with a prominent edge. Minimal, jagged lines of lacing scar the glass. The aroma is deeply malty and fruity, with alcohol soaked figs, plums, and raisons showing over sweet, darkly roasted caramel. Its quite fumy from the alcohol note, with traces of candied sugar coming through as well. The flavor follows suit, as sweet caramel, nougat, and dark fruits combine for a heavy, malty punch. A strange, almost vegetal component enters the fold on the finish, which is a bit unsettling. A medium-full, syrupy body plants that sour vegetable taste at the far rear of the tongue. Surprisingly, its not overly cloying, but the aftertaste brings this one down. Weird brew. Its not horrible, but I won’t be rushing back to this one either. MattShizzle (385), Bernville, Pennsylvania, USA Feb 6, 2008 Bottle. Very dark copper color. Excellent - very rich, somewhat roasty flavor. Not overly sweet. Tastes strong, but not as strong as it actually is. RollinHard (750), Fort Worth, Texas, USA Feb 5, 2008 Pours a clear brown with tan-orange highlights, Quickly dissipating head. Aroma is a little whisky, grape juice, brown sugar, and sawdust (woody, but in a grassy way). Taste seems a bit absent at first, and it’s rather light flavored up front. A bit of tangy wood, grapejuice a brown sugar, toast, butterscotch malt, but it’s somehow watered down. Prickly carbonation that stings while adding no creaminess to this slick, somewhat airy beer. Finally some "strong beer" flavors appear in the finish, where all the sweet/bitter flavors reside. Finishes with a bit of brown sugar, nuts, butterscotch, toast/pumperknickel, grapes. Bitter at first, fades to nuttiness. Quite a letdown, as the Schloss Eggenberg (sp?) was better than this, and the Aventinus Eisbock way beyond both of them. shendrix (478), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA Feb 4, 2008 A tad sweet for a daily drinker, but a damned fine beer. The aroma is a smoky brown-sugar malt. Thick on the tongue, tasting of smoke, malt, and molasses all mingled together with smoke and a beautiful alcohol warmth. An excellent and complex brew. Joeh (1908), Buckinghamshire, England Feb 4, 2008 Bottle. Brown coloured with no head. Rich, sweet, toffee aroma. Oily feel, little carbonation, sweet malty caramel, sour fruit and salty finish. craftbeerdesign (731), Alpharetta, Georgia, USA Feb 1, 2008 bottle from BOM club... pours a deep dark brown with a thick head, which eventually disappears completely. slight aromas of coffee, sweet malts and alcohol. nice body full of flavor.... it is warming with dark fruits and molasses. the finish is enjoyable and wraps the beer up nicely. overall a very good beer that will be enjoyed again.
