Commercial Description:
The ice bock, also known as "Bayrisch Gefrorns", owes its discovery to a coincidence. According to the chronicles of the Kulmbacher brewery, some time around 1900 an apprentice forgot on a cold winter day to carry two barrels of bock beer into the brewery cellar. The barrels stayed outside, were covered by ice and snow and weren’t discovered until the following spring. The barrels had burst and the apprentice was reprimanded. But the carelessness was a stroke of luck because under the thick ice coat, a bock beer extract remained, strong tasting and high in alcoholic content.
Even if the dark, tasty speciality is not produced in this spectacular way anymore, the chance that gave birth to this beer became a tradition. Today this beer rarity is brewed in a modern brewing and freezing process, but the incomparable taste is still the same and can always be enjoyed in winter months.

draft @ The Old Toad - Rochester, NY) Dark ruby red color with a thick tan head. Aroma is very sweet and malty with lots of raisins and lots of sweet malts. Flavor is extremely rich and flavorful with lots of malt, dark fruits, toffee, raisins, and caramel. Lots of alcohol in the finish and a very full-bodied mouth feel.

Poured dark amber in color with a small tan head. Aroma of sweet malts and raisins. Great balance of carbonation and alcohol with a fantastic sweet finish.

Pours a dark red maroon, almost glowing, with a small off brown head which hugs the sides of the glass. Smells of rich, sweet malts, alot of dark fruit, berries, grapes, and a little apple. The taste is very fruity, with a syrupy mouthfeel, rich malts, with a hint of some cinnamon too. The caramel is big in the finish, which turns into sweet fruit. Much is the same in the aftertaste. Killer brew.

Bottle from Hi-time. Popped the cap and I get an immediate malt smell. Poured into glass generating a 1 finger head of creamy small bubble goodness, that quickly faded to a fine ring around the glass. Swirling the glass yields a thin veil of milk like lacing, nice. Dark color, like super concentrated tea. Lots of malt and dates in the aroma. Taste is sweet but finishes very dry and possibly a tiny bit sour with the medium notes of alchohol rising from the tongue to the nose. Much better than the EKU28 I bought by mistake. Good, but better with cheese I think.

11.2oz bottle. this big beer in a little bottle pours out so brown it looks black, but when held to light it reveals itself to be a beautiful ruby shade. a one inch foamy tan head rises and falls pretty quickly. big raisin and plum aroma a little bitter chocolate and some alcohol also appear as well as some spice. clove maybe? powerfull and intense flavor of roasted malt and caramel but with more of a banana and clove dynamic than chocolate and coffee like a regular dopplebock. big spicy hops control the back half with the high alcohol never really coming to play, hiding behind the massive flavor. excellent.

330ml botlle shared with Finn. This one is supposed to be one of the best German beers. And the brew came partly up to my expectation. Almost black body with a deep rusty tint. Rim of foam around the surface of the body. Aromatic alcohol notes in aroma mixed with dark fruits. Vineous dessert beer with taste of figs, molasses and nuts. More gentle alcohol at the ending. Should be still greater in the wintertime (Fasslwirtschaft, Riedenburg 21.06.2007).

Yay, another eisbock. I don’t have many. Wonderful nose of this one, reminds me of dates, wood, plums, red grapes and some burnt, charred oak or cedar wood. Slightly boozy in the nose as well. Texture is moderately thick, slick and a bit sweet, full and thick. Tastes more of plums, pipe tobacco and wood, with a nice earthy, dark fruit alcohol presence. Great stuff.

Weak aroma for such a flavorful beer. The appearance is a deep red with a good amount of head. The flavor is fantastic! It starts of with a malty bite and mellows out with a vanilla and toffee finish. I really enjoyed this one!
