Commercial Description:
The ice bock, also known as "Bayrisch Gefrorns", owes its discovery to a coincidence. According to the chronicles of the Kulmbacher brewery, some time around 1900 an apprentice forgot on a cold winter day to carry two barrels of bock beer into the brewery cellar. The barrels stayed outside, were covered by ice and snow and weren’t discovered until the following spring. The barrels had burst and the apprentice was reprimanded. But the carelessness was a stroke of luck because under the thick ice coat, a bock beer extract remained, strong tasting and high in alcoholic content.
Even if the dark, tasty speciality is not produced in this spectacular way anymore, the chance that gave birth to this beer became a tradition. Today this beer rarity is brewed in a modern brewing and freezing process, but the incomparable taste is still the same and can always be enjoyed in winter months.

Bottle courtesy of HogTownHarry. Pours an incredibly bubbly clear deep ruby with a large lasting tan head -- nice! Sweet yet roasty aroma with burnt sugar, caramel, chocolate, molasses, and hops. Wonderful flavour of toasty malt, burnt brown sugar, caramel, dark fruit and more -- nice and complex. Alcohol’s well hidden. Medium to full bodied. This is fantastic stuff, not too sweet and really easy to drink, definitely one of the best Eisbocks out there.

Bottle: Rich ruby colored pour with a small beige head that is quickly gone. Nose is sweet with dark fruits, malts, and brown sugar. The taste is initially sweet with dark fruits and evolves into a malty, molasses, dark fruits blend. A very nice balance of flavors that is not overly sweet. Very good.

Very sweet aroma, syrupy and malty. Taste is as malty as expected, and very heavy with woody notes and definite fig/raisin flavor. Aftertaste is a strong kick of alcohol.

12 oz bottle. Pours bold mahogany with thin ivory head. The aroma is oak, red wine, sour cherries, brown sugar, slight chocolate, anise, and flowers. The flavor is brown sugar and oak, with a very faint sour note. Some woody bitterness comes out, too. Smooth sweetness sticks around throughout. Light alcohol is detectable, but not intrusive at all. Pretty good.

Bottle, thanks Hogtown Harry. Dark ruby red, little head. Nice malty, nutty, sweet alcohol aroma. Great taste - rich, malt, light hops, intense sweetness. Complex, thick body. Great sipper - Rudy, did you really order a pitcher of this for us on the last round in Buffalo a few weeks back? Yikes...

Rated 4/22/06: Pours a deep dark ruby color with little head and no lacing. Interesting sweet aroma that touches on a fruity overtone. Thick full mouthfeel very nice. The flavor is what really pulls this ice bock together. The malts are extremely sweet almost too sweet but then there are flavors of figs and raisins with some caramel and even a touch of chocolate. Very complex indeed. The finish is smooth and of course sweet. Enjoyable but definately on a limited basis.

On draft at Capone’s . Pours deep dark ruby with a solid light khaki colored head. Aroma of dark fruits (raisins, figs), roast, and alcohol. The flavor is sweet, syrupy, raisins, figs, and a nice alcohol kick. Excellent.

On tap at capones, sampled with Stegosaurus. Served in a snifter. Deep ruby pour with fluffy off white head. Roasted malt and raison aroma. Mild roast taste with alcohol kick on the backside. Very good.
