Harsebrau (164), Kansas City, Missouri, USA Jan 23, 2007 Dark brown pour with a tan head of medium thickness that didn’t last too long. Rich aroma of malt and chocolate. This beer was thick in the mouth but not overly heavy....there was some carbonation. Tasted of molasses, malt, chocolate and a hint of blueberry. Holiday purchase from John’s in Iowa City. entropy1049 (40), Oxford, Iowa, USA Jan 21, 2007 Dark brown passing no light through the glassware. Big thick loose head of medium beige that dissepates quickly Smells like roasted malt, licorice, and chocolate. Thick mouthfeel and very sweet. Definately a licorice and dark molasses flavor; well carbonated for as dark as it is. Very gentle alcohol burn-just enough to warm you up. detroiter (958), Euphoria, Minnesota, USA Jan 19, 2007 Pours a dark brown with an inch of tan foam. Moderate head retention, some lacing - but not much. Too thick? Chocolate, caramel, and alcohol in the aroma.
Sweet chocolate flavors, with well-roasted grain, caramel, and even some moderately smoky undertones. No discernable hop presence. Nearly full-bodied, mild carbonation. faroeviking (6024), Republica Vikingo de las, Faroe Islands Jan 19, 2007 Bottle thick dark borwn colour with a bubbly short head. Aroma of caramel and sirup, malt and some alcohol. Flavour is strong though still smooth, quite caramellic, malty, fruity and warming. Bitter-sweet finish. A good strong and filling Eisbock. charlotte (1997), Vanløse, Denmark Jan 18, 2007 Nice dark brown colour sweet with a frutiy tast of raisend you dont feel the alc. and its almost warms you.Tasty. Stew41 (1042), Caulfield, Australia Jan 15, 2007 Cola-like appearance although definately more brown than black. Thick cooked, caramalised nose, traces of vegemite, elegant. Palate shows excellent balance, notwithstanding the 9.2%. More raisened, caramel malts, hints of chocolate sweetness in the mid palate. Low fizz is very appropriate. Really quite impressive. RedHaze (370), Where the hell am I?, Nebraska, USA Jan 14, 2007 Pours a very dark brown that has some ruby highlights around the edges, with a thin off-white head that fades quickly to a thin spotty cap, and leaves only a small amount of lace.
Smell; lots of molasses caramel malts, with raisins, figs and other dark fruits. The smell has a strong vinous quality to it.
Taste; toasted caramel malts with some sweet molasses, and very rich. The vinous quality comes through in the flavor as well, with some grapes, and other dark fruits. There’s also a bit of a nutty taste in the finish to go along with a slight alcohol burn. Mouthfeel is full bodied, and very creamy. This goes down pretty easy, though it’s definiely one to sip. muenster (339), Sevierville, Tennessee, USA Jan 12, 2007 Bottle. Pours ruby brown with a thin white head. Aroma is a bit restrained, mostly just sweet malt, a little dark fruit maybe as well. The flavor is sweet malts, and the hint of dark fruit in the aroma really comes thorugh in the flavor, the middle is like drinking sweet carameled rasins (and even though I hate raisins, it’s quite tasty) then the finish is nice warming alcohol.
