bierkoning (5987), La Tropica, Netherlands Jan 11, 2007 Bottle. Deep dark brown color. Caramelly, sugary aroma with molasses. Sugary sweet flavor with tobacco, molasses and licorice. Some caramally bitterness in the aftertaste. Burning alcohol. TheCheeseMan (538), Saint Cloud, Florida, USA Jan 9, 2007 Updated: Apr 28, 2007100% malt on the nose. Very sweet on the palate, rich, thick, warming and bold. As I continue, the alcohol gradually warms, wonderful beer. Hangover (764), Atlanta, USA Jan 4, 2007 Dark brown pour with reddish highlights around the bottom and edges. Aroma is of cherries, malt and alcohol. Lightly carbonated. Initially very warming and strong. Lots of dried fruit and sweetness towards the middle. The finish is long with a sticky sweetness that lingers. Pretty good for something I found on the bottom shelf of the store priced at 1.99! fordest (1954), Santee/San Diego, California, USA Jan 2, 2007 12 oz bottle. Pours cola brown with a fizzy cola head. Didn’t last long and barely left a ring. Lots of malty pruney aroma. Anise in there too. Raisin and caramel. More dark fruit in the flavor. More Caramel and sublte hop finish. Alcohol is very well hidden. Very tasty. jason (1620), Easton, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 1, 2007 Updated: Mar 24, 2007Bottle dated July 11th 1996. Pours a deep blood red with a decent size head and light carbonation, surprisingly for being over 10 years old. Smells of sweet malt and currants/cherries. Taste is of a very dry cherry and sweet at the same time. Very well balanced and smooth with a dry taste that is very drinkable and made me want more. This bottle could stand another 5 years or so. Cheers. 505 (271), Echo Park, California, USA Dec 31, 2006 Pours darkish brown with a red hue to it. Thin light brown head. Aroma is caramel, raisins, and a slight vinousness. Flavor is sweet, warm finish. Medium bodied. Pretyy good . . . for a German beer. BiochemProf (53), Boone, North Carolina, USA Dec 31, 2006 Creamy 2-finger tan head atop a black pour. Caramle malty aroma mixed with slight coffee and a light floral hoppiness. Full bodied mouth feel. Hints of maple syrup, toasty malt flavor. High abv well hidden throughtout. An excellent beer. after4ever (2711), Brier, Washington, USA Dec 28, 2006 33,cl. This label must be a hoot at parties. (If an American brewer making *any* amoutn of profit tried this label, though, I’d bash it relentlessly.) Pours a gorgeous deep dark brown with a dense but thin layer of moussy off-white head that doesn’t stick around for too awfully long. Some occasional clingy lace. Buttery, toffeeish, brown-bread notes dominate the nose. Cloying, sticky-sweet attakc; thick body, low (but perceptible) carb, and bold flavors. Lots of malt sugar all over the place. Tastes almost like a stuck mash, there’s so much unfermented, but of course we know better. This is just a grain surplus turned into a refreshing party beverage. The mid-palate carries that explosion of meadow flavor across into a sticky, metallic finish. My brain certainly wants to understand how amazing this beer is and how highly regarded it’s been for so long, but this doesn’t satisfy as refreshment or as a contemplative beer to sit and sip. It’s groundbreaking, rather than timeless.
