Commercial Description:
The ice bock, also known as "Bayrisch Gefrorns", owes its discovery to a coincidence. According to the chronicles of the Kulmbacher brewery, some time around 1900 an apprentice forgot on a cold winter day to carry two barrels of bock beer into the brewery cellar. The barrels stayed outside, were covered by ice and snow and weren’t discovered until the following spring. The barrels had burst and the apprentice was reprimanded. But the carelessness was a stroke of luck because under the thick ice coat, a bock beer extract remained, strong tasting and high in alcoholic content.
Even if the dark, tasty speciality is not produced in this spectacular way anymore, the chance that gave birth to this beer became a tradition. Today this beer rarity is brewed in a modern brewing and freezing process, but the incomparable taste is still the same and can always be enjoyed in winter months.

Pours a very dark brown that has some ruby highlights around the edges, with a thin off-white head that fades quickly to a thin spotty cap, and leaves only a small amount of lace. Smell; lots of molasses caramel malts, with raisins, figs and other dark fruits. The smell has a strong vinous quality to it. Taste; toasted caramel malts with some sweet molasses, and very rich. The vinous quality comes through in the flavor as well, with some grapes, and other dark fruits. There’s also a bit of a nutty taste in the finish to go along with a slight alcohol burn. Mouthfeel is full bodied, and very creamy. This goes down pretty easy, though it’s definiely one to sip.

Bottle. Pours ruby brown with a thin white head. Aroma is a bit restrained, mostly just sweet malt, a little dark fruit maybe as well. The flavor is sweet malts, and the hint of dark fruit in the aroma really comes thorugh in the flavor, the middle is like drinking sweet carameled rasins (and even though I hate raisins, it’s quite tasty) then the finish is nice warming alcohol.

100% malt on the nose. Very sweet on the palate, rich, thick, warming and bold. As I continue, the alcohol gradually warms, wonderful beer.

Dark brown pour with reddish highlights around the bottom and edges. Aroma is of cherries, malt and alcohol. Lightly carbonated. Initially very warming and strong. Lots of dried fruit and sweetness towards the middle. The finish is long with a sticky sweetness that lingers. Pretty good for something I found on the bottom shelf of the store priced at 1.99!

12 oz bottle. Pours cola brown with a fizzy cola head. Didn’t last long and barely left a ring. Lots of malty pruney aroma. Anise in there too. Raisin and caramel. More dark fruit in the flavor. More Caramel and sublte hop finish. Alcohol is very well hidden. Very tasty.

Bottle dated July 11th 1996. Pours a deep blood red with a decent size head and light carbonation, surprisingly for being over 10 years old. Smells of sweet malt and currants/cherries. Taste is of a very dry cherry and sweet at the same time. Very well balanced and smooth with a dry taste that is very drinkable and made me want more. This bottle could stand another 5 years or so. Cheers.

Pours darkish brown with a red hue to it. Thin light brown head. Aroma is caramel, raisins, and a slight vinousness. Flavor is sweet, warm finish. Medium bodied. Pretyy good . . . for a German beer.
