Commercial Description:
The ice bock, also known as "Bayrisch Gefrorns", owes its discovery to a coincidence. According to the chronicles of the Kulmbacher brewery, some time around 1900 an apprentice forgot on a cold winter day to carry two barrels of bock beer into the brewery cellar. The barrels stayed outside, were covered by ice and snow and weren’t discovered until the following spring. The barrels had burst and the apprentice was reprimanded. But the carelessness was a stroke of luck because under the thick ice coat, a bock beer extract remained, strong tasting and high in alcoholic content.
Even if the dark, tasty speciality is not produced in this spectacular way anymore, the chance that gave birth to this beer became a tradition. Today this beer rarity is brewed in a modern brewing and freezing process, but the incomparable taste is still the same and can always be enjoyed in winter months.

11.2 oz. bottle. Poured a deep clear ruby which can only be seen when held to sunlight. Thick, luscious head. I would have rated appearance a 5 except the head was gone before mid-glass. Really nice aroma of malt, barrel syrup, dates and figs. Dates, figs and caramel noted in the flavor with a warming alcohol finish. Sweet, smooth, almost silky mouthfeel. As the beer warms, the alcohol becomes more pronounced as do the sugary flavors. I actually preferred this beer ice cold and liked it less as it warmed. Very tasty stuff.

bottle. I once left a can of beer out in the freezing cold and it exploded. I was left with an empty can. Had I known to look for the extract, what could have been? Dark amber pour with small head. sugar, cherry, malt aroma. light/medium body. cherry and plum. sugary mouth improves as it warms. slight alcohol burn that is very enjoyable. Not an enormous fan of this style but enjoyed this one.

Bottle, at Café Abseits in Bamberg, October 2006. Deep bronze, moderate lasting white head and muted condition. Fruity malt with slight oxidation and sweet burdock notes in the aroma, full bodied and malty sweet with some oxidation and spicy peppery fruit in the mouth and quite short sticky sweet finish with more oxidation lingering .

Poured a dark stained oak with thin tan head. The aroma was of sweet malts, cherry fruitiness, a bit of alcohol and a hint of caramel sweetness. The flavor is very similar to the aroma. Starts with a thick dark fruity sweetness and sweet caramel. Then the malts fade and the fruitiness takes on a complexity with apple and date notes. The beer taste ends sweet, fruity, caramel, a tad nutty and some alcohol warmth.

As usual, I am wowed by an Eisbock. I was impressed by the color and initial tan head on the pour - it disappated very quickly. The color is a very dark murky brown with very faint red/orange highlights. This has a highly alcoholic smell. Dark dried fruit, brown sugar, dough are also present in the aroma. The palate is super sweet yet balanced a bit by the alcohol. But the alcohol isn’t a negative or out of place. In the middle of the palate is a nice graham cracker taste that is in between the layers of sweetness. I love this, but then this is my favorite style of beer.

Sampled at Broudys Holiday Beerfest,Jacksonville FL 12/2/2006. The shining star of the new beers sampled at this fest. Wonderfully rich in flavor and texture. Smooth as silk, and delicious. Good alcohol hit as well. I loved the flavor of this one, and will soon pick up a few more to enjoy and rate properly. .. .. rerate 8/24/2007 .. .. .. Finally, almost two years later I find another bottle to try. Its even worth the wait.. a delicious and kickass brew. Fruity malty aroma. Flavor is sweet but not cloying, then develops a subtle malt liquor character, and then dark fruit flavors explode on the tongue, and fade to a spicy, hoppy bitterness. Alcohol warmth is noticeable in the back of the throat. A delicious treat.. I loved it.

One of my absolute favorites and one of the very few things that makes me look forward to the colder months (I enjoy Franziskaner Hefeweiss during warmer times) ! My first taste of Eisbock was via an accomplished Pennsylvanian homebrewer. I’d never tasted anything like it before and it was years before I found a retailer that didn’t look at me like I had three heads when I inquired about this style. If you enjoy this I also recommend Kasteel Bruin (Donkel?) and Samichlaus. Other similar style recommendations welcome!

The 11.2 ounce bottle poured a clear beautiful deep garnet colored beverage with a thin fizzy off-white head that was completely diminishing and left no lacing on the glass. Typically high alcohol equals no head and this one is a whopping 9.2% by volume. The aroma was a complex sweet fruity mixture of caramel malts and dried dark fruits such as plums and raisins and dates. There was also a background note of aged leather and oak. The body was quite full with a soft carbonation and a thick, smooth texture. The flavor started out quite sweet and stayed that was. The flavor profiles followed the aromas closely. The finish was long and there was decided warmth that developed. This is a great winter warmer.
