Commercial Description:
The ice bock, also known as "Bayrisch Gefrorns", owes its discovery to a coincidence. According to the chronicles of the Kulmbacher brewery, some time around 1900 an apprentice forgot on a cold winter day to carry two barrels of bock beer into the brewery cellar. The barrels stayed outside, were covered by ice and snow and weren’t discovered until the following spring. The barrels had burst and the apprentice was reprimanded. But the carelessness was a stroke of luck because under the thick ice coat, a bock beer extract remained, strong tasting and high in alcoholic content.
Even if the dark, tasty speciality is not produced in this spectacular way anymore, the chance that gave birth to this beer became a tradition. Today this beer rarity is brewed in a modern brewing and freezing process, but the incomparable taste is still the same and can always be enjoyed in winter months.

Dark brown in color. Rich malt aroma from the pour. Smells of caramel and toffee. Wonderful almond colored head. Wow. What rich flavor and texture. Lots of figs, dates, plums, raisin. Finish of some chocolate. Alcohol is not that present until it hit the bottom of my stomach. This is an amazing beer, and my first German eisbock.

Bottle courtesy of Hogtownharry: Poured a nice brown color beer with a medium foamy head with above average retention and lacing. Aroma of sweet cookie dough with dry figs and raisins. Taste is quite sweet without being disgustingly sweet with some dry gigs, cookie dough and plums. Body is about average and alcohol is well hidden. Very good beer and I’m sure it would be interesting to cellar a few of those.

Bottled. Dark brown colour, brown small head. Aroma is alcohol, sweet malts and caramel. Flavour is sweet caramellish malts along with plum and alcohol. Wellbalanced, and the alcohol shows mostly like a warming touch in the finish.

Opaque black colour, frothy tan head. Coffee aroma with a wee bit chocolate. Thick mouthfeel, invigorating intensity, malts and bitters melding together.

Dark brown with some off white bubbles. Sweet strong aroma of prunes. Taste has liquorice and dark fruits, plenty of alcohol and a little bitterness. I would like to say I enjoyed my first eisbock, but I can’t.
