Commercial Description:
The ice bock, also known as "Bayrisch Gefrorns", owes its discovery to a coincidence. According to the chronicles of the Kulmbacher brewery, some time around 1900 an apprentice forgot on a cold winter day to carry two barrels of bock beer into the brewery cellar. The barrels stayed outside, were covered by ice and snow and weren’t discovered until the following spring. The barrels had burst and the apprentice was reprimanded. But the carelessness was a stroke of luck because under the thick ice coat, a bock beer extract remained, strong tasting and high in alcoholic content.
Even if the dark, tasty speciality is not produced in this spectacular way anymore, the chance that gave birth to this beer became a tradition. Today this beer rarity is brewed in a modern brewing and freezing process, but the incomparable taste is still the same and can always be enjoyed in winter months.

Amber/brown color, offwhite head. Malty vanilla aroma with some toffee. Malty fruity flavor. You can tell this is quite a strong beer.

bottle. Deep dark amber-brown colour, small beige head. A malty sweetness dominates, balanced by some fruity flavours of plum and raisins. Not too sweet. Shy hoppy flavours in the finish.

Bottle poured a clear dark reddish brown with a small diminishing brown head. Aromas of raisins, plums, carmel and some roastiness. Palate was heavy bodied and slick. Flavors of dark fruit, roasted malt, carmel, and a hint of spice with a sweet mildly warming finish. Hides it’s alcohol well.

Bottle courtesy of HogTownHarry. Pours an incredibly bubbly clear deep ruby with a large lasting tan head -- nice! Sweet yet roasty aroma with burnt sugar, caramel, chocolate, molasses, and hops. Wonderful flavour of toasty malt, burnt brown sugar, caramel, dark fruit and more -- nice and complex. Alcohol’s well hidden. Medium to full bodied. This is fantastic stuff, not too sweet and really easy to drink, definitely one of the best Eisbocks out there.

12-oz. bottle received via trade with fordest. Pours sparkling dark brown with a small fizzy light brown head, mostly diminishing, spare lacing. Aroma is average malt (molasses, caramel, nutty), light hops (grass), average yeast (dough) with notes of date and maple syrup. Medium bodied, gritty texture, lively carbonation and a bitter finish. Average duration, moderate sweetness and acidity, light bitterness. Sort of bland flavor; alcohol is well hidden.
