Commercial Description:
The ice bock, also known as "Bayrisch Gefrorns", owes its discovery to a coincidence. According to the chronicles of the Kulmbacher brewery, some time around 1900 an apprentice forgot on a cold winter day to carry two barrels of bock beer into the brewery cellar. The barrels stayed outside, were covered by ice and snow and weren’t discovered until the following spring. The barrels had burst and the apprentice was reprimanded. But the carelessness was a stroke of luck because under the thick ice coat, a bock beer extract remained, strong tasting and high in alcoholic content.
Even if the dark, tasty speciality is not produced in this spectacular way anymore, the chance that gave birth to this beer became a tradition. Today this beer rarity is brewed in a modern brewing and freezing process, but the incomparable taste is still the same and can always be enjoyed in winter months.

Bottle. Dark mahogony beer with a nice tan head. Big dark carmalized malt aroma with a bit of fruitinerss. Nice caramelized malt flavor with some brown sugar and maple sugar. Alchol well hidden. Caramel malt lingers. Well but together, no off flavors and everything melds nicely.

Pours a muddy brown color with a thin light brown head. Strong and rich aroma and flavor of malt and dark fruits. Medium body, liquorous texture, lively carbonation. Hmmmm me like ! I love the rich, heavy malt in this beer !

I didn’t really know this was such a highly rated brew when I bought it and -more important- drank it. However I should not let that change my opinion of the brew. :-) Aroma is quite okay. Sweetish dark fruits, malty. Black coloured with a thin, off-white/brown head. Taste is quite sweet, caramel malty, dark fruity. Massive body and quite sticky. Alcohol noticeable everywhere. This is not really my cup of sticky sirup.

Bottle thanks to ilovedarkbeer. Pours with a large, creamy, light brown head that stays for a while. Good lacing. Deep brown body. Aroma of dark fruits, cherries, sweet, brandy, and berries. Taste is sweet with caramel, marshmallows, fruit and berries. Syrupy mouthfeel, light bubbles, well hidden alcohol.

In short: A syrupy typical Eisbock. Sweet sipper. Good for the style but not my style.
How: Bottle 11.2oz, vintage 1 year old.
The look: Very dark ruby body topped by a small tan head
In long: Big molasses and tobacco nose. Taste is sweet, molasses, dates and figs, graham cookies, spicy notes, brown sugar, hard candies. This really is a sweet dessert sipper with no balance attempt. Overall pleasant crispness but the body is a bit syrupy. 9.2% is apparent with a little bite in the finish. A reference for the Eisbock style but Eisbock is just not my style. Don’t recycle the bottles, give them to your acid-dropping stoner cousin for hours of psychedelic entertainment.

Acquired via trade. This beer is dark brown/copper with a thin light tan head. Very little lacing. The aroma is very sweet with caramel, raisins and malt. Medium-bodied and chewy with a flavor that is very unique. It has some aspects of a Barley Wine, a Scotch Ale, and a Bock. Syrupy sweet with malt, molasses, raisins and brown sugar. There is a faint woody character at times too. The finish continues the sweetness but there is a bit of hops bitterness there. I am really unfamiliar with this style but I like it.

Aroma is full candied malt, pitfruit, treacle and spice, deep auburn, trace of red at the sides, pours a short lived toffee head. Tastes of pitfruit, treacle, candied malt, caramel, walnuts and as it warms, some toffee. Very full bodied, complex, very well balanced, bitter with a completely dry finish. Fantastic!

330ml botlle shared with Finn. This one is supposed to be one of the best German beers. And the brew came partly up to my expectation. Almost black body with a deep rusty tint. Rim of foam around the surface of the body. Aromatic alcohol notes in aroma mixed with dark fruits. Vineous dessert beer with taste of figs, molasses and nuts. More gentle alcohol at the ending. Should be still greater in the wintertime (Fasslwirtschaft, Riedenburg 21.06.2007).
