Commercial Description:
The ice bock, also known as "Bayrisch Gefrorns", owes its discovery to a coincidence. According to the chronicles of the Kulmbacher brewery, some time around 1900 an apprentice forgot on a cold winter day to carry two barrels of bock beer into the brewery cellar. The barrels stayed outside, were covered by ice and snow and weren’t discovered until the following spring. The barrels had burst and the apprentice was reprimanded. But the carelessness was a stroke of luck because under the thick ice coat, a bock beer extract remained, strong tasting and high in alcoholic content.
Even if the dark, tasty speciality is not produced in this spectacular way anymore, the chance that gave birth to this beer became a tradition. Today this beer rarity is brewed in a modern brewing and freezing process, but the incomparable taste is still the same and can always be enjoyed in winter months.

Bottle: Aroma has lots of buttery caramel. Pours a dark brown with orange hilights when held to the light. Tan head fades quickly. Real sweet. Lots of caramel, toffee, chocolate, and brown sugar. Light alcohol is barely noticeable in the finish but has a little warming affect. Definitely sweet but not nearly sweet as the other eisbocks I’ve had. The more I drink this the more I like it. Very good.

Bottle: Deep brown, coppery tone, fairly translucent, moderate foamy light beige head, nice lacing.   Heavy dark fruit aroma, slight raisin and fig notes.   Heavy raisiny flavor, dark fruits, very figgy, yummy!   Big body with a fairly moderate mouthfeel.   I thought it would have been a bit thicker.   Finishes a bit heavier at least, lots of dark bready character, figs, dates, and very pruny.   Alcohol is well hidden.   Very enjoyable, but could be a bit sweeter and viscous in my opinion.

Appearance: Pours out a dark brown-dark red color marked by a ring of very fine, off-white froth. Smell: Oh, yes! A splendid, sweet aroma of plums, caramel, port wine, and molasses. Taste: Astoundingly sweet! Such sweetness. I just felt a reflexive shot of adrenaline shoot through my beer-infested veins. Be right back. Alright. Whew. A great, seemingly endless depth of rich maltiness with intense flavors of caramel, brown sugar, maple syrup, and dark fruits. There’s a slight nuttiness present, as is an ever so faint hop bitterness. The finish is a bit of a contradiction, as the acute flavors stay on the tongue for several minutes at a time. Mouthfeel: Full-bodied. A touch of soda-like carbonation keeps this beer from being too syrupy. Still... it’s quite silky. Almost sensual. Any thicker, and this beer would go great on a batch of pancakes! Drinkability: Just the one, thank you. Whew.

Bottle: Aroma was sweet and had a fermented alcohol presence also. Dark body with red hue, small tan head. Sweet favor along with some alcohol burn at first. Alcohol mellowed out along with the burn and it was sweet plums and cherry rest of the way. Medium fruit taste left on palate. Good Beer

Really thought this was an excellent beer. A thick flavor, without any straininess of some many bocks. Flavor was very sweet and tasty. Just great. Had one from 1996. malt malt malt malt malt, but in a great way Scored it 4.4. More coating and just malty.

Big beer. Syrupy, raisins in the nose. Brown color - almost black, with a tight head that leaves legs on the glass. Chocolate, nutty, spicey flavors. Dry end with a touch of bitter. Thick body and smooth as hell. Perfect balance and a clean palette. Fantastic.

Nice deep brown coloured body with a strong ruby tint and a thinnish tan head. Aroma of strong concord grapes, nuts, coffee and a lot of sweet sugars. Full-bodied; Strong alcoholic flavour with grapes up front, fading to a lot of malt and ending with a bunch of nuts. Aftertaste shows a bit of sugars, a lot of nutty maltiness and a significant amount of alcohol in the palate. Overall, a good icebock with good complexity. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Oliver’s Beverage in Albany, New York on 22-December-2008, sampled on 09-January-2009 at home in Washington.
