Commercial Description:
The ice bock, also known as "Bayrisch Gefrorns", owes its discovery to a coincidence. According to the chronicles of the Kulmbacher brewery, some time around 1900 an apprentice forgot on a cold winter day to carry two barrels of bock beer into the brewery cellar. The barrels stayed outside, were covered by ice and snow and weren’t discovered until the following spring. The barrels had burst and the apprentice was reprimanded. But the carelessness was a stroke of luck because under the thick ice coat, a bock beer extract remained, strong tasting and high in alcoholic content.
Even if the dark, tasty speciality is not produced in this spectacular way anymore, the chance that gave birth to this beer became a tradition. Today this beer rarity is brewed in a modern brewing and freezing process, but the incomparable taste is still the same and can always be enjoyed in winter months.

Bottle from Premier Gourmet, Buffalo. Nice dark mahogany colour with a small light brown head. Aroma is sweet and malty, with notes that oddly reminded me of Dr. Pepper mixed with birch beer (my two favourite soda flavours, so I mean that as a compliment!). Flavour didn’t wow me at first, but as the beer warmed, it got quite complex and more impressive - sweet and malty, some dark cherry and brown sugar, earthy - starting to remind me a bit of Brio, another of my favourite sodas - nice, warm finish, but not as hot as I expected from a 9.2% beer. This is some great stuff.

Nice deep brown coloured body with a strong ruby tint and a thinnish tan head. Aroma of strong concord grapes, nuts, coffee and a lot of sweet sugars. Full-bodied; Strong alcoholic flavour with grapes up front, fading to a lot of malt and ending with a bunch of nuts. Aftertaste shows a bit of sugars, a lot of nutty maltiness and a significant amount of alcohol in the palate. Overall, a good icebock with good complexity. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Oliver’s Beverage in Albany, New York on 22-December-2008, sampled on 09-January-2009 at home in Washington.

12oz bottle courtesy of kramer17801. Thanks, Jason! Pours a dark brown, slightly translucent with an orangish tinge; off-white head with decent retention at the edges. Nice aroma: fruit leather, toffee; hints of cocoa and caramel; alcohol well-hidden. Medium, chewy mouthfeel: similar to an amped-up doppelbock; caramel, roasted malts, bready notes, dried fruits and the slightest hint of citrus. Ends in chocolate and toffee on a medium-dry finish.

Pours very dark brown almost black. Aroma is chocolatey with a hint of the alcohol in the nose. The head is white but doesn’t stick around long. Taste is a little roasty dark chocolate. Maybe a hint of caramel. This is extremely rich and strong in flavor. On the palate it is smooth but not very thick. It starts off very sweet and finishes with that 9% alcohol smack. It gets better as it warms and more flavor begins to appear. I was looking for a spring bock. This isn’t quite it but a very good beer indeed!

Pours a clear deep dark amber color that is topped by a light brown head. Intense aromas of malt waft from my glass; meaty, dark malts, and alcohol. The taste is smooth, thick, and creamy. Lightly sweet and very well integrated. The alcohol is well hidden as well. Damn this beer is a malty wonderland, only a hint of hop bitterness. The malt certainly plays center stage here, as it should in a bock. This is so smooth, no harsh notes to take away from the thick malt flavors, this beer is ripe with melanoids, and notes of raisins too. Just a great beer that demonstrates the characteristic bock flavors wonderfully.

Bottle. Pours dark and thick with a nice, small head. Aroma is molasses and roasted malt, and the flavor duplicates the aroma. Palate is nice and thick, and it lingers on the tongue. Only drawback to this beer is a slight coppery finish on the back of the throat, but this unwanted visitor is soon ushered away, leaving a thick, malty flavor and coating. Alcohol is nicely hidden. I’d love another one.

Bottle (33 cl) from Ambrosetti beer store, Berlin. Dark opaque brown, mediu beig head. Nutty and caramelly malt aroma, quite alcoholic. Thick body and soft carbonation. Surprisingly dry, with moderate bitterness. Would be very good if it were less alcoholic.
