Commercial Description:
The ice bock, also known as "Bayrisch Gefrorns", owes its discovery to a coincidence. According to the chronicles of the Kulmbacher brewery, some time around 1900 an apprentice forgot on a cold winter day to carry two barrels of bock beer into the brewery cellar. The barrels stayed outside, were covered by ice and snow and weren’t discovered until the following spring. The barrels had burst and the apprentice was reprimanded. But the carelessness was a stroke of luck because under the thick ice coat, a bock beer extract remained, strong tasting and high in alcoholic content.
Even if the dark, tasty speciality is not produced in this spectacular way anymore, the chance that gave birth to this beer became a tradition. Today this beer rarity is brewed in a modern brewing and freezing process, but the incomparable taste is still the same and can always be enjoyed in winter months.

1996 Vintage, bottle # 9924, rated 2003
Like a few others here, I am rating a vintage bottle of the old, Reichelbrau version of this beer, which was more famous, and much stronger (10%) than the version they make today. Dark brown colour, still with good carbonation. Beautiful dark malt aroma - so well defined it's like chewing on Munich malt. Sweet, thick body. Sweet malt flavours mixed with nuts, brown bread crust. This beer was cloying when fresh, but it's perfectly fine now. Long, tasty finish. A lip-smacking dessert beer.

Fresh vintage, 9.2% version: Bright demerara brown. Aroma of brown sugar aroma w/ slight gasoline, biscuits (surprising for such a dark beer), molasses. Thick body, oily with very low carbonation. Flavours are refined but muted molasses. This is quite sweet. Straightforward, but beautiful and lingering.

Mahogany color. Late evidence of caramel and malt aroma. Full malty body, powerful, a lot of caramel, some sweetness. Very good.

Bottle, 2006-01-10, 6-4-7-3-13=33
Dark brown color, thin creamy head. Strong aroma, mature, of caramel, and a hint of very ripe apples. Quite thick body in the beginning, malty, sweet, with loads of caramel, but also a bit metallic at the end, and underhopped. Average (too much unbalanced and without complexity).

(best by 12/31/03 -- my bottle says 9.2% ABV) Big tan head atop a clear, dark brown body. Aroma is sweet, prune, chocolate, vinous. Taste is sweet and rich malty, raisin/prune, chocolate, caramel, light bitterness despite the evident hops. Finish is alcohol warming with hint of burn. Soft, full-bodied palate, closer to wine than beer in texture.

On tap at Biermuseum, Koln. Very dark brown colour. Good dry malt, OK yes its 24 degrees, but it is excellent. Really thick in the mouth. Really good toffee, natural carbonation, quite soft, some liquorice, nicely and subtley warming.

Bottled (BB 12/2009). Dark nut brown color, small beige head. Very bready, ryeish aroma with caramelly hints. Flavor has ryebread, toasted malts, raisins, plums .. overall semi-sweet. Suprisingly also some cardboard. Some similarities to Celebrator. Not mindblowing eisbock, but overall enjoyable.

I made the mistake to drink this one too cold, but luckily I forgot some in my glass.... It’s dark brown with a nice head. The aroma is sweet with notes of roasted malt and dark, ripe fruits. The flavour sends my thought in the direction of an abbey ale... I get notes of chocolate, dark, ripe fruits, a warming alcohol and a slightly dry, bitter finish. Absolutely interesting, but it has to be warmer than you normally would expect...
