Commercial Description:
The ice bock, also known as "Bayrisch Gefrorns", owes its discovery to a coincidence. According to the chronicles of the Kulmbacher brewery, some time around 1900 an apprentice forgot on a cold winter day to carry two barrels of bock beer into the brewery cellar. The barrels stayed outside, were covered by ice and snow and weren’t discovered until the following spring. The barrels had burst and the apprentice was reprimanded. But the carelessness was a stroke of luck because under the thick ice coat, a bock beer extract remained, strong tasting and high in alcoholic content.
Even if the dark, tasty speciality is not produced in this spectacular way anymore, the chance that gave birth to this beer became a tradition. Today this beer rarity is brewed in a modern brewing and freezing process, but the incomparable taste is still the same and can always be enjoyed in winter months.

Dark brown in color. Rich malt aroma from the pour. Smells of caramel and toffee. Wonderful almond colored head. Wow. What rich flavor and texture. Lots of figs, dates, plums, raisin. Finish of some chocolate. Alcohol is not that present until it hit the bottom of my stomach. This is an amazing beer, and my first German eisbock.

Bottle: Deep brown, coppery tone, fairly translucent, moderate foamy light beige head, nice lacing.   Heavy dark fruit aroma, slight raisin and fig notes.   Heavy raisiny flavor, dark fruits, very figgy, yummy!   Big body with a fairly moderate mouthfeel.   I thought it would have been a bit thicker.   Finishes a bit heavier at least, lots of dark bready character, figs, dates, and very pruny.   Alcohol is well hidden.   Very enjoyable, but could be a bit sweeter and viscous in my opinion.

A very dark coppery brown with a thin tan head. The aroma is rich with prunes and chocolate (combined with the malt, it’s almost like a liquid prune brownie.) The flavor is sweet and rich with caramel added to that prune brownie. The body is thick and the brew is warming as it goes down. It’s odd how this beer’s 9.2% ABV warms on the way down while some beer’s 12% ABV are hardly noticed.

This eisbock pours with adark brown body topped by a medium thick off-white head with good lacing. The aroma is great. It’s sweet and malty with wonderful notes of caramel, candy sugar and a slight hint of alcohol. The flavor is just as good with an added rasty nuttiness and a touch of bitterness. Medium to full bodied, yet a little thin, and warming.

Bottle frojm Once Upon a Vine Richmond North. Brown pour with almost no head. Heavy aroma of dark fruits and banana. Taste is the same with additional hints of roasted grain and bitterness. Very thick feel

Bottle courtesy of Hogtownharry: Poured a nice brown color beer with a medium foamy head with above average retention and lacing. Aroma of sweet cookie dough with dry figs and raisins. Taste is quite sweet without being disgustingly sweet with some dry gigs, cookie dough and plums. Body is about average and alcohol is well hidden. Very good beer and I’m sure it would be interesting to cellar a few of those.

Poured a nice dark red-brown color with almost no head and little lacing. However, the aroma was semi sweet and malty. The flavor did not disappoint and had a touch of coffee or chocolate behind a sweet and malty front. The alcohol was not overpowering but detectable. Nice and smooth mouthfeel with low carbonation. Delicious beer. Will seek out more Eisbocks.
