Commercial Description:
The ice bock, also known as "Bayrisch Gefrorns", owes its discovery to a coincidence. According to the chronicles of the Kulmbacher brewery, some time around 1900 an apprentice forgot on a cold winter day to carry two barrels of bock beer into the brewery cellar. The barrels stayed outside, were covered by ice and snow and weren’t discovered until the following spring. The barrels had burst and the apprentice was reprimanded. But the carelessness was a stroke of luck because under the thick ice coat, a bock beer extract remained, strong tasting and high in alcoholic content.
Even if the dark, tasty speciality is not produced in this spectacular way anymore, the chance that gave birth to this beer became a tradition. Today this beer rarity is brewed in a modern brewing and freezing process, but the incomparable taste is still the same and can always be enjoyed in winter months.

Tasted at the San Diego International Beer Festival. Dark copper with a creamy tan head. Sweet malty aroma and taste with a sugary finish.

Pours a dark but transparent, inky purple-brown. A fizzy, foamy, off-white head settles quickly to a splotchy film with a prominent edge. Minimal, jagged lines of lacing scar the glass. The aroma is deeply malty and fruity, with alcohol soaked figs, plums, and raisons showing over sweet, darkly roasted caramel. Its quite fumy from the alcohol note, with traces of candied sugar coming through as well. The flavor follows suit, as sweet caramel, nougat, and dark fruits combine for a heavy, malty punch. A strange, almost vegetal component enters the fold on the finish, which is a bit unsettling. A medium-full, syrupy body plants that sour vegetable taste at the far rear of the tongue. Surprisingly, its not overly cloying, but the aftertaste brings this one down. Weird brew. Its not horrible, but I won’t be rushing back to this one either.

(330 ml bottle). ABV of my bottle was 9,2%. Nearly black (= dark ruby when held to the light), good to moderate creamy tan head. Started drinking it too cold, surprisingly weak initial aroma, improves as the beer warms up - malty, but not very complex. Flavour is malty sweet with burnt notes - not nearly as cloying as EKU 28 (thank God!) but also less complex. Alcohol is well hidden. OKish mellow aftertaste. Good beer, but it doesn't exactly take my breath away.

12oz bottle. i thought on the last day of winter this would be a good send off. pours a dark reddish brown with small tan head, but the color just does it for me. aroma has really big sweet plums and raisins. flavor is pretty sweet with dark fruits, plums, raisins, and black cherries, with nice toffee and caramel supporting the fruit. alcohol is well hidden. perhaps body is a tad thin. a tasty eisbock indeed!

2004: Pour is dark dark opaque brown with a thin tan head...smell is sweet, molasses, hints of oxidation, taste is sweet and rather flavorless...maybe some molasses, wood, vanilla, dark fruits, but some relatively up front oxidation....it plays well with the flavors though...

Dark brown and clear. Has an off-white head, mostly lasting. Strong aroma, heavy sweetness, something sharp too, pepper? Flavor is heavy sweet. Syrup texture. Soft carbonation. Warming alcohol.

Bottle; sadly this is only my second for the style. Color was a good looking dark auburn with a smallish head. Aroma of caramel coverd raisins and sugary nuts, with a hint of alcohol. Alcohol was well hidden. After taste was very minimal and the flavor was very smooth overall. Similar flavor elements as the aroma. Good stuff.

I have had several mediocre bocks beers recently, so I am especially looking forward to trying this one... Deep mahogany/chesnut color. Lively carbonation, but no lasting head or crown, not even the slightest hint of a veil. Aroma is malt, toffee, something fruity, and slightly earthy. This beer is complex and full of flavors, including alcohol, wood, raisins, chocolate toffee, and English walnut. A slight sweet and chewy caramel bitterness stays in the back of the throat after the finish. Medium body. This was an excellent bock and exactly what I needed! It is quite complex and very enjoyable to savor. .33 L bottle (Best before 1522892), $3.73 from River’s Bend.
