Commercial Description:
The ice bock, also known as "Bayrisch Gefrorns", owes its discovery to a coincidence. According to the chronicles of the Kulmbacher brewery, some time around 1900 an apprentice forgot on a cold winter day to carry two barrels of bock beer into the brewery cellar. The barrels stayed outside, were covered by ice and snow and weren’t discovered until the following spring. The barrels had burst and the apprentice was reprimanded. But the carelessness was a stroke of luck because under the thick ice coat, a bock beer extract remained, strong tasting and high in alcoholic content.
Even if the dark, tasty speciality is not produced in this spectacular way anymore, the chance that gave birth to this beer became a tradition. Today this beer rarity is brewed in a modern brewing and freezing process, but the incomparable taste is still the same and can always be enjoyed in winter months.

0.33 l bottle. Mahagony color with creamy head. Malty, bready, berryish, caramelly, toffeish and a bit vinous aroma. Sweet, malty and caramelly flavor with toffee, raisins and warming alcohol. Balanced and pleasant.

Totally, thoroughly, completely black in color, with a thick, creamy, cocoa-tan head, an utter delight for the eyes. Aroma: bitter, yet soft, a bit wooden, with few associations I normally pair with beers, utterly unique...sweet, yet...damn, I give up, this is a toughie to pigeonhole! Big ups to anyone who can do it with confidence, unlike myself! Taste: rich, sharp, full with flavor, toasty, chewy, boasting a magnificent mouthfeel, swimming happily amonst the senses, flooding, and utterly delighting the palate. 9.2% ABV, but it doesn’t show it at first, ...wait..yeah, I spoke too soon, here it comes...warm and pungent, at the least...Excellent texture, full-bodied, a rich elixir, ever-so-tasty, dark, delicious, powerful...in a word? One word? DAY-YUM!!! Hell of an eisbock!

Nice label. I like shiny things. Pretty beer, deep reddish brown, almost black, nice head faded away slowly. Huge malt aroma, with some plum notes, quite inviting. A bit thinner than I was expecting, it got better as it warmed. Smoky molasses malts, caramel, and faint dark fruit. Not bad, particularly since this isn’t my favorite style.

POurs very cloudy dark mahogany. Small off-white head. Aroma is mild and hoppy/malty. Not very noticeable though. VEry drinkable beer. Tastes sort of like chocolate milk. Roastiness in the finish. For being 9.2, this is very good.

07.25.05 Bottle dated 12.31.03, I assume that’s a bottling date. Dark brown pour with minimal head of tight tan foam that lingers with a smattering of lace. Sweet aroma of candied plums, brown sugar, molasses, and some concentrated peppery alcohol. Dense palate, molasses, roasted nuts, caramelized pineapple, shortbread. Sweet and sticky. Pretty yummy. The alcohol that’s so present on the nose doesn’t offend the palate. A pleasant surprise of a beer I’d never heard of before picking it up just for the sake of trying another eisbock.

2003 vintage. Dark, ruby body with light carbonation and thin, loose, soapy, gray head. Nice complex aroma of cherries, figs, molasses, prunes, roasted nuts, and chocolate. Huge malty-cola with dried fruit elements, but considerably less pruny than the Aventinus Eisbock. Appealing as a sipper. Palate is thick and sticky like warm syrup, but nice and appealing. Very solid and enjoyable all-around. I'd love to try one of these after extended cellaring.

Bottle. Opaque dark brown, ruby under light, with a brown head. Sweet and mildly alcoholic nose with some candy sugar and brown sugar, mostly malty. Sweet taste is sludge-thick, great body; woody, dark malts, molasses, brown sugar, and warming alcohol. Dry with juust enough hops. Slightly sticky with a lasting aftertaste. Strong and bursting with flavor, had to forcibly slow myself down. I strongly agree with Papsoe - this has a lot in common with a trappist.

A nicely black pour with minimal head. Sweet malty nose. Creamy malt body.
