Commercial Description:
The ice bock, also known as "Bayrisch Gefrorns", owes its discovery to a coincidence. According to the chronicles of the Kulmbacher brewery, some time around 1900 an apprentice forgot on a cold winter day to carry two barrels of bock beer into the brewery cellar. The barrels stayed outside, were covered by ice and snow and weren’t discovered until the following spring. The barrels had burst and the apprentice was reprimanded. But the carelessness was a stroke of luck because under the thick ice coat, a bock beer extract remained, strong tasting and high in alcoholic content.
Even if the dark, tasty speciality is not produced in this spectacular way anymore, the chance that gave birth to this beer became a tradition. Today this beer rarity is brewed in a modern brewing and freezing process, but the incomparable taste is still the same and can always be enjoyed in winter months.

An absolutely magnificent beer, it should be in the top 50! Attractjve dark garnet color, very dark, hold it to the light. Smallish head. Big warming pleasing toffeeish dark malty nose. It takes all thats good about the bock style and magnifies it without distorting it like some big beers do to their base styles. So smooth, big rounded sweet full mouthfeel. Drinks easily, as easily as any strong beer I’ve had. Almost gulpable, but the potency and fullness catch up quickly enough to slow you down. Perfectly balanced in the finish. A truly excellent beer for all occasions.

Pours very dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma is dark thick rich toffee with some breadiness to it. Some alcohol is noticable on the aroma also. Full bodied with light carbonation. Taste has roasted malt that is quite toasty. There is also brown sugar / toffee sweetness - slightly cloying with a doughy like thickness that has dark fruit elements. Finish has a bit of spritz and spice while keeping the richness. A very good beer, but not something I could have too often.

Deep ruby-brown in colour, thin but lingering beige coloured head, light lacing. The aroma is a bit oxidized, fruity (plums), raisins, gingerbread and alcohol. The flavour is also showing some signs of oxidization along with a toffee sweetness, some chocolate, alcohol and dark fruits. Warming mouthfeel, medium body, mild carbonation. Finishes sweet, warm and lingering.

This is showing its age for sure but it is still drinkable. Probably doesn’t have much life left in it at this point of aging.

330ml bottle obtained from my Secret Santa in the winter of 2004.

Beautiful deep garnet red when held up to the light. Minimal tan head as expected. The sweet caramel malt aroma was good but needed some intensity. The flavor was the same as the aroma. Overall a little more complexity and body were needed to bring this up into the class of the best Eisbocks.

bottle - Pours dark ruby with a thin head. It has an excellent aroma of dense caramel malts and dark fruits such as cherries and raisins. This medium bodied, lightly carbonated brew has a sweet, fruity, caramel rich taste and avoids being too cloying. I thought the alcohol was quite mild for being over 9%. It has a pleasing, mildly sweet finish. Delicious. (And the bottle reflects light nicely... oooo... shiny!)
