Commercial Description:
The ice bock, also known as "Bayrisch Gefrorns", owes its discovery to a coincidence. According to the chronicles of the Kulmbacher brewery, some time around 1900 an apprentice forgot on a cold winter day to carry two barrels of bock beer into the brewery cellar. The barrels stayed outside, were covered by ice and snow and weren’t discovered until the following spring. The barrels had burst and the apprentice was reprimanded. But the carelessness was a stroke of luck because under the thick ice coat, a bock beer extract remained, strong tasting and high in alcoholic content.
Even if the dark, tasty speciality is not produced in this spectacular way anymore, the chance that gave birth to this beer became a tradition. Today this beer rarity is brewed in a modern brewing and freezing process, but the incomparable taste is still the same and can always be enjoyed in winter months.

Bottle. Brown coloured with no head. Rich, sweet, toffee aroma. Oily feel, little carbonation, sweet malty caramel, sour fruit and salty finish.

This dark brown beer poured with a decent tan head and a sweet malty aroma. There is a nut brown malt flavor and a carbonated mouthfeel. The finish is bittersweet chocolate with a slight amount of alcohol heat. Overall, a very nice brew.

Re-rate 9/28/2004 Clear, deep, dark, mysterious garnet body. Dense lasting light tan head. The aroma is very malty as expected, caramel, molasses, frsh baked biscuits and a hint of alcohol. Flavor profile consists of caramel, molasses, alcohol, licorice, and plenty sweet. Alcohol never intrudes, you know that it is there but it reminas low-level throughout. The body is brilliant, smooth, soft, full, and numbing. The bar by which all Eisbocks are held in my opinion.

2/15/2004 9/5/94/18 - 4.5 Deep dark garnet body with a voluminous creamy tan head that sticks to the glass in wispy sheets of fine lacing. The aroma is very sweet caramel, molasses, and dark brown sugar. The flavor is very sweet, lots of molasses and caramel which creates a pure, beautiful malt flavor profile. The body is very thick and creamy. The alcohol is completely hidden, which is a feat for a lager at ~10% ABV. Another winning Eisbock. I really wish more brewers attempted this wonderful style.

This was my first Eisbock and I hope I chose well! Pours very dark in the glass but when held up to the light appears ruby red and brown. The head is medium thin and dark tan, doesnt last too long. The aroma is fairly complex and remeniscent of a traditional ale. Ripe dates, sweet, slight alcohol, faint caramel, molasses, and a sort of mustiness. The flavor isn’t quit as upfront as the aroma. Taste mostly molasses and mellow aged raisins and dates. Also has that mustiness to it. The alcohol is well done. The palate is very nice, thick, smooth, and full. The finish is very warming and satisfying. The more you drink this beer the more pleasent it is. The alcohol settles in your stomach and leaves you with this internal warming sensation. Reminds me of old, not like old food or old people. Just like something that would have been more popular hundreds of years ago, but thats just me.

On draft at Capone’s . Pours deep dark ruby with a solid light khaki colored head. Aroma of dark fruits (raisins, figs), roast, and alcohol. The flavor is sweet, syrupy, raisins, figs, and a nice alcohol kick. Excellent.

The bottle looks really good, the beer in the glass also. Strong and alcoholic aroma. Tastes the same, strong, alcoholic, malty, a bit like wood. Well balanced malty finish with notes of liquorice. Good beer!
