Commercial Description:
The ice bock, also known as "Bayrisch Gefrorns", owes its discovery to a coincidence. According to the chronicles of the Kulmbacher brewery, some time around 1900 an apprentice forgot on a cold winter day to carry two barrels of bock beer into the brewery cellar. The barrels stayed outside, were covered by ice and snow and weren’t discovered until the following spring. The barrels had burst and the apprentice was reprimanded. But the carelessness was a stroke of luck because under the thick ice coat, a bock beer extract remained, strong tasting and high in alcoholic content.
Even if the dark, tasty speciality is not produced in this spectacular way anymore, the chance that gave birth to this beer became a tradition. Today this beer rarity is brewed in a modern brewing and freezing process, but the incomparable taste is still the same and can always be enjoyed in winter months.

Dark brown with a tannish head and spotty lacing. Crystal malts come out with caramel and roast. Dough and figs. Some brown sugar. Flavors of sour malts with some bitter notes. More sugar and some notes of sour dough. More of the same malts. Sticky and bitter finish with traces of alcohol.

Pour is a deep red with almost no head. Aroma is malty and berry. Mouthfeel is thick and syurpy. Flavor is malts ,malts and more malts. Very heavy brew with a ton of malt. Also alcohol is there in a big way. Deffinatly good for sipping slow.

(Vintage 11-July-1996, bottle # 38,646) Wow, decent head for an 8 year old beer. Reduces quickly but has decent carbonation keep the head regenerating. I love to watch eisbocks. Fun to sit and watch the little eddies of carbonation on the surface. Rich aroma of licorice, soy sauce, alcohol and peat. Color is a deep red mahagony. Flavor is thick and malty. Bit more soy sauce. Huge smoke presence after the swallow. Was not prepared for that. SOmething strange in there. Almost like a dry sweet potato skin. Finish is slightly bitter and warming with a lingering burnt/smokey/salty soy sauce aftertaste. Not bad but different. I dig eisbocks!

Available now at Belmont Party Supply in Dayton. Superb eisbock; malty (soooo toffeeish!), very fresh, quite sweet and almost too much so, alcohol is 9.2% - you'd never know. Besides Southampton's Double Eis (which is much much paler in color and even more vanillaey and caramelly) I cannot imagine a better eisbock. So much smoother than Aventinus.

Bottle best before 31/12/03, dark mahogany color, with a tan head, sweet caramelized malt nose, with toasted malt, fruit cake note, candied dark fruits, hint of chocolate in the aroma follows through on a full-bodied malty palate, with a nice malted character, beautiful fruity chocolatey accent, toasted malt, hint of raisin, plum fruitiness, molasses, leading towards a sweet malty fruity finish, with the alcoholic content well hidden.

Bottle. Nose is sweet. Taste is thick and syrupy with a sweet honey note. Other notes to come out are raisin, brown sugar, and some smoke. Very, very nice.

Shared this one w/ SkyCop32. Picked up at Maruhn Getränke in Darmstadt. Pours a dark reddish brown. Sweet caramel/roasty aroma, smells like blackstrap molasses. Roast malt/chocolate flavor with a touch of fruit and great alcohol bite in the finish..

On tap at Mike and Molly’s in Champaign, IL. Pours a deep chestnut color with no real head. The aroma is sweet, malty, dried fruit, caramel. Smooth and full on the palate. The taste was sweet malt with a touch of bitterness but the balance was done perfectly. An excellent example of the style. Should be. It’s the prototype.
