Commercial Description:
The ice bock, also known as "Bayrisch Gefrorns", owes its discovery to a coincidence. According to the chronicles of the Kulmbacher brewery, some time around 1900 an apprentice forgot on a cold winter day to carry two barrels of bock beer into the brewery cellar. The barrels stayed outside, were covered by ice and snow and weren’t discovered until the following spring. The barrels had burst and the apprentice was reprimanded. But the carelessness was a stroke of luck because under the thick ice coat, a bock beer extract remained, strong tasting and high in alcoholic content.
Even if the dark, tasty speciality is not produced in this spectacular way anymore, the chance that gave birth to this beer became a tradition. Today this beer rarity is brewed in a modern brewing and freezing process, but the incomparable taste is still the same and can always be enjoyed in winter months.

Bottle courtesy of Styles. Deep brown in color. Lazy tan head barely forms and then recedes like my IRA into a ring. Rich malt and molasses aroma. Smootn and coating mouthfeel. Decent carbonation. Nice mild molasses flavor with alcohol bite. Nice.

Bottle purchased at State Line Liquors. Pours deep brown with some red hues fighting to sneak through. Aroma of chocolate covered cherry, raisens. Rich malt flavor of chocolate and dark dried fruits. Some vinous qualities. The alcohol in the finish is pleasant and warming, not that annoying burning that some other beers have. This one is damn good. So good that I am going to get another bottle next time I go in.

1996 bottle consumed in 2007. Clear dark amber/brown body with a medium-sized tan head, fading. The nose lightly sweet and vinous with oxidized port, toffee and prunes. the flavor is lightly sweet with cherry, fruit punch, toffee and red grape skins. Medium/full body is very soft with light, gentle carbonation.

Poured a little flat with little carbonation; sweet; maybe good after dinner drink, but not for a session or more than one.

Deep ruby in the glass. Cotton candy, malt, dark cherry nose. Appealing hop bitterness at first, then sugar with an appropriate alcohol burn. Plums throughout. Creamy body, soft mouthfeel.

Best eisbock I’ve had (though I certainly haven’t had many). A nicely dark pour, with a gem-like glow in the middle, and a substantive head. Smells very much like a port, and even has some of the consistency thereof - figs, raisins, a touch of anise. But the sweet malts are balanced by that slight alkie burn that’s distinctive to this style, giving it a real sipper’s quality. Good stuff.
