Commercial Description:
The ice bock, also known as "Bayrisch Gefrorns", owes its discovery to a coincidence. According to the chronicles of the Kulmbacher brewery, some time around 1900 an apprentice forgot on a cold winter day to carry two barrels of bock beer into the brewery cellar. The barrels stayed outside, were covered by ice and snow and weren’t discovered until the following spring. The barrels had burst and the apprentice was reprimanded. But the carelessness was a stroke of luck because under the thick ice coat, a bock beer extract remained, strong tasting and high in alcoholic content.
Even if the dark, tasty speciality is not produced in this spectacular way anymore, the chance that gave birth to this beer became a tradition. Today this beer rarity is brewed in a modern brewing and freezing process, but the incomparable taste is still the same and can always be enjoyed in winter months.

Dark brown purplish pour with garnet highlights and thin light tan head. Nose of raisin and anise, some plum, and huge amounts of sweet dark malt, but absent is alcohol. Flavors are earthy, rum soaked fruit, black cherry, peat, leather. There is a pleasant warming sensation but not much alcohol flavor. Body is medium chewy with high carbonation. Very tasty and very alcoholic, a winning combo in my book...

Bottle. Pours clear dark brown with a big off-whit head. The aroma has a fantastic and sweet wort-like, grainy German maltiness with tones of caramel, sweet juicy dark bread, almond paste, maple syrup, light roast, caramelized nuts and dark fruits like prunes and sugar sweaty figs. The woody alcohol notes are notable - yet surprisingly soft. Some grassy and mild herbal hops are also present. Cocoa milk. The flavour is massive malty with an alcohol sting to back it up. Tones of caramel, oatmeal cookies, sweet wort, grass and herbs. The flavour is maple sweet but the alcohol dries out the beer on the finish. Light to medium sweet. The mouthfeel is fat, syrupy and chewable with a nice smallish carbonation. The aftertaste is of dark fruits, wort, brown sugar and a light hoppy touch. Medium to full bodied.

A very nice beer. Glad to know that I have several more bottles of the beer waiting for me. The last eisbock I had was a bit overwhelming so I wasn’t too sure what to expect from this one. Everything was in great form. An aroma chocolately raisins/plums, dark brown sugar, and black cherry ice cream. The taste is equally as sublime as the aroma with strong notes of molasses, vanilla, chocolate, cookie dough and dark fruits. Extremely easy to drink, which is dangerous at over 9% alcohol. Very nice beer.

Bottle. Pours a very deep ruby with a small head. The aroma is rich of overripe fruits, oak, brown sugar, and more malty, dense smells. Mouthfeel is slick and semi viscous. I get a bit of soy sauce buried in the finish with dark plums and raisins up front. Brown sugar, wood, and rye flavors are noted as well. This is a pretty darn tasteful eisbock without any danger of oversweetnes.

Bottle from Hi-time. Popped the cap and I get an immediate malt smell. Poured into glass generating a 1 finger head of creamy small bubble goodness, that quickly faded to a fine ring around the glass. Swirling the glass yields a thin veil of milk like lacing, nice. Dark color, like super concentrated tea. Lots of malt and dates in the aroma. Taste is sweet but finishes very dry and possibly a tiny bit sour with the medium notes of alchohol rising from the tongue to the nose. Much better than the EKU28 I bought by mistake. Good, but better with cheese I think.

33cl bottle from Knightly Spirits (Orlando, FL). Pours a dark reddish brown with next to no head. Aroma is sweet malt, ripe dark fruit, raisins, sugar plums, some phenol. Flavor is similar to the aroma with some stronger phenol notes and just a slight bitterness on finish. Generally light to medium body with a much stronger nose than flavor.

Bottle shared by footbalm, thanks man. Pours a cloudy toffee color with a medium tan head. The aroma is very sweet; almost like a Barley Wine; sweet candies and tons of rich malts. The flavor was quite interesting; loads of rich and intense malt, a ton of dusty dryness leaving your palate really quickly. Not too hot, just a bit of alcohol warmth. A bit of yeast and caramel also. Pretty damn good and interesting.

Bottle dated July 11th 1996. Pours a deep blood red with a decent size head and light carbonation, surprisingly for being over 10 years old. Smells of sweet malt and currants/cherries. Taste is of a very dry cherry and sweet at the same time. Very well balanced and smooth with a dry taste that is very drinkable and made me want more. This bottle could stand another 5 years or so. Cheers.
