Commercial Description:
The ice bock, also known as "Bayrisch Gefrorns", owes its discovery to a coincidence. According to the chronicles of the Kulmbacher brewery, some time around 1900 an apprentice forgot on a cold winter day to carry two barrels of bock beer into the brewery cellar. The barrels stayed outside, were covered by ice and snow and weren’t discovered until the following spring. The barrels had burst and the apprentice was reprimanded. But the carelessness was a stroke of luck because under the thick ice coat, a bock beer extract remained, strong tasting and high in alcoholic content.
Even if the dark, tasty speciality is not produced in this spectacular way anymore, the chance that gave birth to this beer became a tradition. Today this beer rarity is brewed in a modern brewing and freezing process, but the incomparable taste is still the same and can always be enjoyed in winter months.

From a slender 11.2 oz. narrow neck brown bottle with a coded bottled/freshness date on bottom right side of the reflective silver dotted front label. Made a very good appearance, poured a rudy hued garnet with a large foamy pale tan head that settled into a thin, foamy lacing, moderate carbonation. Had a nice sweet malty aroma with dark ripe fruitiness, raisins and figs, with whiffs of sweet alcohol. A creamy, smooth medium bodied mouth feel, good drinkability. A sweet dark fruity malty taste with a little breadiness, a warm alcohol presence in the palate, a light hoppiness and a sweet malty finish with a little alcohol warmth lingering on the tongue.

(2003 edit.) I llove bocks, I ador dobbelbocks and eisbocks amazes me; they are great beers. One impression witch goes throughout the beer, is chocolate. The color is deep, golden brown and a bit hazy, liquid chocolate. Also has a heavy chocolate sent, with a round rum-like aroma. Not that complex a taste; loads of powermalts and alcohol, no more. Finish has a tad of coffee, and the bottle contains no yeast. Big problem for me is the commercial descriptions notice of hop estract, is that cool in beer?.

Pours dark brown with ruby hues, and a very thin tan head. Aroma is caramelized wort and toffee. Taste is caramelized, syrupy stickiness. Mouthfeel is heavy bodied with light carbonation.

Pored nearly still. No head to speak of. First sip has a lot of viscosity and is candy sweet. Lots of prune and other dark fruits. Very warming, and the alcohol is getting to my melon quickly- spinning, spinning- oh, I feel good!! lallallallallallallallallalla Yeah!

Mahogany with a large medium tan head that slowly diminishes and leaves a trail of lace on the glass as it goes. Aroma of brown sugar, nuts, toffee, bread alcohol and mild fruit. Strong taste of sweet malts, alcohol, fruit, light nuts and caramel. Finishes with an alcohol burn so it obviously doesn’t hide the alcohol too well. My first eisbock – while it won’t be my last I’m not real anxious to try the next one.

Bottle. It’s hard not to get a little excited about this... Pour is a leathery brown with a quickly fading head. Aromas are almost wine-like... fruit (red grape juice, black cherries, maybe some blackberries) and a bit of sugar. The alcohol that is present is my biggest hang up with the flavor. Other than that, it has almost a wine/brandy like flavor with a touch of a brownish malt presence. I thought this would be a little more distinctive and intriguing... as is, it is good, but I’m wondering what happens if I forget about one in the basement for a while?
