Commercial Description:
The ice bock, also known as "Bayrisch Gefrorns", owes its discovery to a coincidence. According to the chronicles of the Kulmbacher brewery, some time around 1900 an apprentice forgot on a cold winter day to carry two barrels of bock beer into the brewery cellar. The barrels stayed outside, were covered by ice and snow and weren’t discovered until the following spring. The barrels had burst and the apprentice was reprimanded. But the carelessness was a stroke of luck because under the thick ice coat, a bock beer extract remained, strong tasting and high in alcoholic content.
Even if the dark, tasty speciality is not produced in this spectacular way anymore, the chance that gave birth to this beer became a tradition. Today this beer rarity is brewed in a modern brewing and freezing process, but the incomparable taste is still the same and can always be enjoyed in winter months.

The pour is black with red highlights. No head. Sweet dark candi aroma. Sweet smooth taste with a silky body. I like it.

12 oz bottle from Oak Tree. Poured a deep mahogany brown with deep scarlet edges and a large foamy light beige head. Sticky sweet aroma of buttered raisin toast, prunes, plum, chocolate, brown sugar, toffee. Full dry body that is much drier then I was expecting. The flavor is nicely balanced between the sweet aroma and dry body. Notes of raisin, brown bread, plum, prune, wood, sugary toffee. Really nice and very well done, highly enjoyable.

Tap. And what a find. Clear carmel like appearance and a lasting head. Nice malty sherry like aroma, and big. Big malt flavor, with carmel and alcohol notes. Absolutely yummy.

Color is a solid shiny tary black, a medium tannish head appears from a vigorous pour only to dissolve quickly away to a thin collar, globby lace in blotches that don't last. Hell...O... there, wow, what a smell! Yummy, thick, rich, lush dark fruit heaven of a nose! Load of malty sweetness, nice dark caramel and toffee with all sorts of little dark fruitened things in there with prune and dates mostly with some fig and raisin hints. Smokey molasses and banana too. What a fantastic nose!! Yum, yum, yum! This stuff rocks!! It takes over where the smell leaves off with the wanting of more! Huge amounts of malty richness, thick and chewy, not overbearingly so, but plentiful in its presense with great dark caramel mixing with toffee. The dark fruits are unimaginably yummy! Plum, prune, fig, and raisin, touches of banana tangyness; then there's some molasses spicyness with some nice little tid bits of smokened earth, brown sugar, chocolate, and black cherry. The sweetness is so rich and deeply dark its wonderful! Has a thinnish start and a bit thin in the finish and is over a little to quick, but overall this sucker is full and thick with a incredibly creamyness and nice chewyness, some stickyness with great lingering malty chewy sweetness leaving notes of dark toffee and tangy dark fruits on the palate. Just a nudge of alcoholic warmth but barely noticeable. One awesome brew thats super yummy, creamy smooth and full of flavor! Strongly Recommended. Easily one of the best beers ever, so unique and very yummy!

Great looking bottle! Almost as dark as a porter with plenty of red highlights. The only foam is a light brown ring around the glass. Aroma is wonderful consisting of dark fruit and brown sugar. Flavor is just as delightful. It is amazingly fruity. Alcohol content is significant and comes through in the flavor as well as providing warmth on a cold winter night. A couple of negatives are a sour bitter aftertaste and a slightly thin feel. But this is an exceptional beer with a complex flavor.

Dark ruby pour. Strong aroma. Smells of fermented fruit and aged grapes. Definitely a red wine type of flavor with a slightly dry finish. Alcohol is not tasted at all. My first eisbock and a superb sample!

mice dark ruby color, nice tan head that dissapears, nose is malt caremel, a little alcohol and raisins. Flavor is dried fruit alcohol, smoke, nose changes to maple syrup as it warms, gets a syrupy mouthfeel. Nice warming feeling.

Don’t let the gimmicky label fool you, this is some great beer. Impeccable balance, just delicious. The best Eisbock I’ve had.
