Commercial Description:
The ice bock, also known as "Bayrisch Gefrorns", owes its discovery to a coincidence. According to the chronicles of the Kulmbacher brewery, some time around 1900 an apprentice forgot on a cold winter day to carry two barrels of bock beer into the brewery cellar. The barrels stayed outside, were covered by ice and snow and weren’t discovered until the following spring. The barrels had burst and the apprentice was reprimanded. But the carelessness was a stroke of luck because under the thick ice coat, a bock beer extract remained, strong tasting and high in alcoholic content.
Even if the dark, tasty speciality is not produced in this spectacular way anymore, the chance that gave birth to this beer became a tradition. Today this beer rarity is brewed in a modern brewing and freezing process, but the incomparable taste is still the same and can always be enjoyed in winter months.

Aroma is seriously sweet malty goodness, like toffee with loads of nutts. Taste is more fruity than nutty with some biscuit/fig intence flavours going on.

Reichelbrau Eisbock #11897 bottled on 7/11/96 sampled on 7/29/05: Transparent dark mahogany brown with some small off-white bubbles and thin lacing. Aroma is intensely complex, dark fruity and oxidized. Body is semi-sweet, sticky and complex with some dark caramel and hints of milk chocolate. This has aged very well.

Rerate best by 10/22/04 sampled on 12/21/04 and cellared for at least a year previously: This stuff has aged quite well. I mean it’s past its best by date and it’s not showing any signs of deteriorating at all. In fact it’s even smoother and more complex with the malts just as flavorable. Ein wunderbares Deutsches Eisbock!

8/20/2003: Pours a rich dark brown with a thin off-white head. Richly malty aroma has good complexity and hints of dark fruits. Body is thick, sweet and alcoholic. Caramel malt and toffee flavors dominate with a mildly bitter and warming finish with chocolate notes. A very good, well-balanced eisbock.

Crystal clear, ruby lager with a small, creamy, beige head. The nose is of merlot, buttermilk, chocolate, dark fruit and maple syrup. Very malty flavor with lots of dark fruit and buttery, caramelly notes. But, very well-bittered, decently balanced and astringent on the backside. Full-bodied with a fizzy/alcoholic mouthfeel. Lengthy, bitter finish. Very good stuff!

Bottle. Hugely sticky. Full on soy sauce and salty caramel, definitely some mollasses. I like the slightly woody/earthy sherry like quality at the end, nice saltyness. Its just too sticky, and there is some raw alcohol evident.

Very deep-chestnut brown, light reddish shine; good, dirty-brown head, fast dwindling to nothing. Sweetish, bread and nutty nose, slightly alcoholic. Sweet, very bready taste, liquorice, plums, rich malt, touch of mocca. Sticky, even viscous mouthfeel, discreet alcohol (at 9.2 ABV!). Better than nice. As good as I remember from Kulmbacher-Reichelbräu days gone by.

Dark reddish colour with a beige head. Sweet malty aroma, caramel hints and notes of alcohol. Strong alcohol flavor but balanced with a nice malty sweetness.
