Commercial Description:
The ice bock, also known as "Bayrisch Gefrorns", owes its discovery to a coincidence. According to the chronicles of the Kulmbacher brewery, some time around 1900 an apprentice forgot on a cold winter day to carry two barrels of bock beer into the brewery cellar. The barrels stayed outside, were covered by ice and snow and weren’t discovered until the following spring. The barrels had burst and the apprentice was reprimanded. But the carelessness was a stroke of luck because under the thick ice coat, a bock beer extract remained, strong tasting and high in alcoholic content.
Even if the dark, tasty speciality is not produced in this spectacular way anymore, the chance that gave birth to this beer became a tradition. Today this beer rarity is brewed in a modern brewing and freezing process, but the incomparable taste is still the same and can always be enjoyed in winter months.

Dark brown/black. Light tan head. Looks serious. Roasted malt, banana, alcohol, sublte clove aroma. Same flavor. Full body. One of my favorite styles, this is an excellent example.

Clear, ruby brown with a thin, white cover and ring. Lots of bready pumpernickel in the aroma, along with molasses and grain. The flavour is what one would expect after experiencing the aroma: sweet cereal grains, pumpernickel like a barleywine but with more malt character, probably owing to the lagerness of this beer. No alcohol flavour, notes of german hops, and some dark malt. Medium to full body with moderate carbonation and not overly sweet. Probably the best value ever.

Bottle at Peculier Pub. Raisins, alcohol, maybe some molasses. Smooth, but still weighty in the mouth. Just not my thing?

330 ml bottle. Very dark colour, almost black, with ruby red hues. Strong chocolatey caramel aroma. Sharp hops initially, but that is soon replaced by lots of chocolate flavours. Mellow soft texture. Much like ovamaltine. Hints of raisins and wood, but it is the chocolate and the caramel that dominates. Thick body, but not at all cloying. A rich malty beer, which is surprisingly drinkable. Best before 22.10.04.

Dark ruby pour. Strong aroma. Smells of fermented fruit and aged grapes. Definitely a red wine type of flavor with a slightly dry finish. Alcohol is not tasted at all. My first eisbock and a superb sample!

330 mL capped bottle [drink by 31.12.03, sampled 25.2.04]: a dark plum liquid with a dense, tightly bubble growing foam. Thick, chewy Grape-Nut aroma with strong dark wheat notes and fleshy alcoholic plums. Wonderful tingling carbonation. Full earthy flavours with soft sweet green apple meat, caramel raisins, thick syrupy malts, soft black breads, and bitter alcohol. Wonderfully full fruity finish.
