Commercial Description:
The ice bock, also known as "Bayrisch Gefrorns", owes its discovery to a coincidence. According to the chronicles of the Kulmbacher brewery, some time around 1900 an apprentice forgot on a cold winter day to carry two barrels of bock beer into the brewery cellar. The barrels stayed outside, were covered by ice and snow and weren’t discovered until the following spring. The barrels had burst and the apprentice was reprimanded. But the carelessness was a stroke of luck because under the thick ice coat, a bock beer extract remained, strong tasting and high in alcoholic content.
Even if the dark, tasty speciality is not produced in this spectacular way anymore, the chance that gave birth to this beer became a tradition. Today this beer rarity is brewed in a modern brewing and freezing process, but the incomparable taste is still the same and can always be enjoyed in winter months.

Dark pour into snifter, but some light seeps through. Sort of a weak, tan head that dissipates quickly. Some bubbles float around aimlessly on the top. Sweet, smokey nose similar to a scotch ale or Ayinger Celebrator Doppelbock. Much more smoke, and a bit of dark, dried fruits. Flavor is sweet, with bits of fruit and chocolate. Heavy flavor with a bit of caramel, toffee and coffee. Palate is thick, with a crisp carbonation. Finish is bittersweet. The ABV is not noticeable in the flavor, but you can feel it half way through the glass. While you could not drink more than one of these in a sitting, one bottle of this is awesome.

330 mL capped bottle [drink by 31.12.03, sampled 25.2.04]: a dark plum liquid with a dense, tightly bubble growing foam. Thick, chewy Grape-Nut aroma with strong dark wheat notes and fleshy alcoholic plums. Wonderful tingling carbonation. Full earthy flavours with soft sweet green apple meat, caramel raisins, thick syrupy malts, soft black breads, and bitter alcohol. Wonderfully full fruity finish.

Malty aroma. twinkling appearance, maly blended with cherry/raisin taste, full taste but not heavy. Palate as smooth as can be.

Pours a dark brown color with an off-white head much like a doppelbock. Chocolate, caramel, dried fruit in the aroma. Burnt wood, lightly fruity, and a little syrupy flavor. Very enjoyable.

I inadvertently let this age a year in my fridge. I’m sure its perfectly fine, but would be nice to have younger to compare. Poured a nice-looking creamy tan head. Dark peanut skin color. Aroma is full, yet lacking. Some sweet cherries, caramel, oak. Its there, just could be a little more, and what is there is hard to figure out. Flavor is great. A bright concoction of oaked cherry and some seemingly burnt allspice and menthol tobacco. It’s a great beer, but one that can get annoying after a while. Maybe a bit sweet.

Bottle. Dark mahogany, some nice head. Very complex flavor and aroma: bready, sweet, cherries, cognac, alcohol. Nice!! Some caramel-chocolate with complex maltiness toward the finish. good stuff.

this is one big fat malty SOB! color is a deep brown with very slight head, just a few bubbles. aroma is loaded with chocolate and raisins. flavor is much the same but finishes with a metallic quality and a fair amount of dryness. this is one of the more surprising beers i can remember. the aroma is to die for.
