Commercial Description:
The ice bock, also known as "Bayrisch Gefrorns", owes its discovery to a coincidence. According to the chronicles of the Kulmbacher brewery, some time around 1900 an apprentice forgot on a cold winter day to carry two barrels of bock beer into the brewery cellar. The barrels stayed outside, were covered by ice and snow and weren’t discovered until the following spring. The barrels had burst and the apprentice was reprimanded. But the carelessness was a stroke of luck because under the thick ice coat, a bock beer extract remained, strong tasting and high in alcoholic content.
Even if the dark, tasty speciality is not produced in this spectacular way anymore, the chance that gave birth to this beer became a tradition. Today this beer rarity is brewed in a modern brewing and freezing process, but the incomparable taste is still the same and can always be enjoyed in winter months.

Bottle #15707, Dated July 11, 1996. Bottle was labelled 24%, but I'm told that was probably indicating degrees plato. Dark amber in colour, very fine white head. Bready and fruity aroma, with currant and possibly plum notes. Also some sherry and slight molasses. Very smooth mouthfeel, with flavours of raisin, molasses, fine sherry, and a pleasant vinous character. Finish was a pleasant nutty bitterness. Very nice.

(11.2 oz. bottle via trade with Degarth, thanks Joe!) Pours a dark brown cola color. Small bubbly biege head melts away to edges and disappears as beer warms. Palate is smooth, slightly syrupy, lightly tingly. Some very fine lacing at start. Aroma is brown sugar, molasses, malt and raisins. Taste is brown sugary malt sweetness, nicely rounded and not harsh. Very slight alcohol burn but alcohol actually pretty well hidden. My first eisbock and what a good one! Very doppel-like but for a little more flavor complexity.

Beer pours with all the characteristics of cola. You’d be hard pressed to tell the difference side to side. This beer has all kinds of sweetness in it, but avoids even approaching sickly sweet. Malt balls, raisins, licorice, plums and brown sugar. Mouthfeel was almost perfect for the beer, just enough carbonation to keep things crisp. Good brew.

Bottle. Dark brown with small head. Pleasent chocolatey maltiness and warming alcohol throughout. Medium to full body. Quite nice.

Found this bottled at World Market in St. Charles, Illinois. Clear but opaque dark reddish-brown pour with a thick, foamy persistant light tan head. Toasty and strong nose of cherry, plum, oak, sherry and milk chocolate. Amazingly strong flavor of coffee, especially late, raisins, cocoa and caramelly sweetness. Finishes very strong, with a note of alcohol. This is a keeper, although couldn’t drink too many of these!

Bottle on 2/08/2008. Ours out a clear, deep ruby with a slowly receding tan head, bu little lace. Molasses, chocolate, vanilla, roasted nuts in an enticing aroma. Full body, rich and velvety mouthfeel with some stickiness and low carbonation. Full, round flavor with caramel dominating, and a touch of spicy bitterness, but not enough to hold back the sweet finish. A slow sipping brew, like a port after dinner.
