Commercial Description:
The ice bock, also known as "Bayrisch Gefrorns", owes its discovery to a coincidence. According to the chronicles of the Kulmbacher brewery, some time around 1900 an apprentice forgot on a cold winter day to carry two barrels of bock beer into the brewery cellar. The barrels stayed outside, were covered by ice and snow and weren’t discovered until the following spring. The barrels had burst and the apprentice was reprimanded. But the carelessness was a stroke of luck because under the thick ice coat, a bock beer extract remained, strong tasting and high in alcoholic content.
Even if the dark, tasty speciality is not produced in this spectacular way anymore, the chance that gave birth to this beer became a tradition. Today this beer rarity is brewed in a modern brewing and freezing process, but the incomparable taste is still the same and can always be enjoyed in winter months.

This could pass fir a pepsi at a glance. Aroma is fortunately much different. Strong barley notes, some anise and some sweetness. Flavor is a little watery at first, but then has more of a alcohol and hoppy bite to it.

color is the darkest ruby, looks black but you can see red through light. head is dark tan and very creamy, quickly reduces to thin layer. aroma is salty, burnt malt, alcohol, prune, some blackstrap molasses, faint caramel. one whiff was like a damp wetsuit in winter. mouthfeel is oily, thick, and creamy, carbonation is strong and subtle at the same time. flavor is dry at first then bitter burnt malt and licorice. tobacco, peaty, and alcohol flavors too. slightly salty finish.

bottle from Rich via our latest rade. a very dark brown-amber with a tan head that fades to a thin layer of creamy foam then subsides to a ring of lace as it chases its way down the glass. mildly sweet with a medium body. a well balanced brew with caramel, nuts, some chocolate and bread dough. a bit warming from the alcohol, but the alcohol is well hidden for the most part. a well crafted brew, thanks Rich for sending this one my way!

11.2 oz bottle, Mindestens altbar bis 22 10 04: I take this to mean best before 10/22/04. Room Temp. Hogwash!!!!!! Pours a deep mohagany w/ fantastic ruby highlights and a lasting cream colored, thick, head. Deeply malty! Toasted and bready malts, some slight smokiness(probably due to age), and a raisiny dark fruit character that have melded together wonderfully! Some hints of alcohol in the nose. Well balanced and port like in the flavor, but lightly so. Clean, lightly oxidized, but it adds to complexity of palate. Some dark raisiny fruity flavors, heavily malty with toasted malts and hints of deep caramel character that adds to the raisiny flavor. Hints of alcohol, but clean otherwise. Finish is malty and caramelized raisins, aftertaste has hints of roast. Full bodied, medium carbonation, and smooth. Alcohol is barely, and I mean barely evident. Wow!! If this stuff is over theh hill, sign me up for old age!!!!! Very nicely complex brew. 10.99/Six, I’m going to get the other 6 tomorrow!!!!

Vintage: July 11, 1996 bottle number 22737: This beer poured a dark amber/brown with all sorts of little yeast floaties in the glass. Hints of chocolate in the taste with a great mouthfeel. A excellent beer and one I will probably never be able to try again due to its availablity.

Deep, deep garnet red with a slightly purple tint in the right light. Large bubbles form a large head that diminishes rather quickly, leaving a nearly still surface with only a little island of fizz in the middle. Nose is powerful, readily apparent from two feet away. Up close, I smell loads of malt with notes of raisin, molasses, white sugar, and alcohol. Thick and slick on the tongue with a spark of carbonation on the back of the throat. Definitely, the sweetness of this beer is most striking initially but it's punctuated delicately with notes of dry fruit and cloves, alcohol warmth, and a pleasing bitter edge in the finish. Absolutely wonderful. A life affirming experience.

Marvelously dark and candied aroma of horehound, licorice, molasses, and even a fine cigar. Dark ruby brown with a thick brown head, good lacing. Medium to full bodied and moderately sweet. Horehound and currant flavor with much more of the former. Plum finish. The alcohol sneaks up on you without you knowing it, so pace yourself. Not a lot of balance, but an amazing niche beer. Outstanding representation of the style and probably a 5 for those who like this type of beer.

Deep mahogany body, rocky tan head. Alcoholic, caramely aroma. Flavor is mostly boozy and sweet, with a full, bready palate. Dry, warm finish.
