Commercial Description:
The ice bock, also known as "Bayrisch Gefrorns", owes its discovery to a coincidence. According to the chronicles of the Kulmbacher brewery, some time around 1900 an apprentice forgot on a cold winter day to carry two barrels of bock beer into the brewery cellar. The barrels stayed outside, were covered by ice and snow and weren’t discovered until the following spring. The barrels had burst and the apprentice was reprimanded. But the carelessness was a stroke of luck because under the thick ice coat, a bock beer extract remained, strong tasting and high in alcoholic content.
Even if the dark, tasty speciality is not produced in this spectacular way anymore, the chance that gave birth to this beer became a tradition. Today this beer rarity is brewed in a modern brewing and freezing process, but the incomparable taste is still the same and can always be enjoyed in winter months.

New bottle Best By 31/12/03, I am holding off on rating one of my vintage bottles. Dark brown wit a hint of orange on the edges. Somewhat wispy looking light tan head. Heavy sweet malts with undertones of brown sugar and actually a touch of hops. Rich, yet somewhat bubbly in feel. Fruit cake with a touch of dark chocolate, warmed and soaked in a rick dark rum. Warming and lingering finish with malt and bitter nut flavor. As a side note my bottle lists an ABV of 9.2% - quite near the one of yore. Also see they are using a hop extract, that would explain the additional spiciness.

Dark crimson brown color, well carbonated with a little head. The aroma is piping with fig, raisin, rum & brown sugar; light alcohol. The flavor is spicy with sugars, alcohol & yeast; complex. Well rounded finish, very tasty.

Bottled. A very dark brown coloured beer with a minimal short-lived head. The aroma is thick and heavy on the alcohol. Sweet caramel and soy sauce tickle the nose. The taste is thick and warming. Woody and licquorice. Tons of malt and tons of alcohol, yet very smooth and very drinkable. This is sheer quality and even though you know it’s high strength and it tastes that way in the mouth, it really is quaffable and very moreish.

Bottle from State Line. Deep brownish pour with 1-finger khaki head. Aroma of Roasty malt, brown sugar, dark fruit, nuts, cacao. Tastes roasty malty, with blackberry, plum, cherry, brown sugar, and hop notes. Nice complexity and palate heft, with well hidden alcohol. This one is a standout.

A dark clear brown bock with an extra thick light moka head. A pleasant molasse aroma with notes of figs and raisins. In mouth, a sweet burned caramel, raisines, stewed prunes, torrefied coffee, and surprising alcohol, hitting you in finale. A siple delectable eisbock. Bottle from BOTW, Nov. 2006.

Bottle. Head is initially small, frothy, brown, mostly diminishing. Body is dark brown. Aroma is lightly to moderately malty (overcooked caramel, dark bread, molasses), with light notes of dark brown sugar, alcohol, and sherry. Flavor is heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Medium to full body, syrupy texture, soft carbonation, moderately alcoholic. Nothing special, but drinkable.
