Commercial Description:
The ice bock, also known as "Bayrisch Gefrorns", owes its discovery to a coincidence. According to the chronicles of the Kulmbacher brewery, some time around 1900 an apprentice forgot on a cold winter day to carry two barrels of bock beer into the brewery cellar. The barrels stayed outside, were covered by ice and snow and weren’t discovered until the following spring. The barrels had burst and the apprentice was reprimanded. But the carelessness was a stroke of luck because under the thick ice coat, a bock beer extract remained, strong tasting and high in alcoholic content.
Even if the dark, tasty speciality is not produced in this spectacular way anymore, the chance that gave birth to this beer became a tradition. Today this beer rarity is brewed in a modern brewing and freezing process, but the incomparable taste is still the same and can always be enjoyed in winter months.

Dense brown, creamy off white head. Rich caramel coated plum and warm musty fig notes are well layered over softer aromas of cherry molasses and brown sugared grapes. Well balanced deep dark fruit flavors ride waves of warm toasted caramel from start to finish. Just a faint hint of hops shows up late, but this is all about the malt. Medium bodied with pillow soft carbonation. A great after dinner sipper in my opinion…

9.2 abv and best before 12/02/2003. Ultra muddy dark brown-violet tinged. Some burnt red on the edges. Small off-white butter head. Big prunes, alcohol and rich choco-caramel malt aroma. Flavor is amazing right away. Big, bold, hearty, some subtle roast, lots of dark fruit, dry caramel, sweet chocolate, prunes. Full body and a grainy and big even texture. Low carbonation. My only complaint was the finish which was very muddled with alcohol, creating a not so nice flavor and slightly metallic. It wasnt a HUGE problem though. The majority of this beer was outstanding. Rerate. Same best before date bottle. I noticed a bit more thinning and unpleasant dryness than the first bottle I tried. Still quite good. My friend liked it better than Kuhnhenn’s Raspberry Eisbock, but I cant agree. Though Kuhnhenns may have too much sweet raspberry, this has too much muddled alcohol apparency.

Pours dark brown. Medium tan head. WOW! Nose is rich and full of chocolate, caramel and malt. The taste reminds me of a chocolaty dessert. Very rich and malty. The chocolate comes through first and foremost along with the malt and a cake-like taste. Some notes of alcohol and vanilla along with molasses round it out. Exquisite. This is awesome! So glad I finally had this. This does, indeed, live up to the hype.

Murky thick dark brown color that pours with the smallest of head. Roasted malt aroma with dried fruits, mostly raisins. Taste is mostly roasted malt with some burnt caramel, brown sugar and dried fruits. Super smooth.

Wow. There is a clear separation between great doppelbocks and merely decent doppelbocks, and this falls into the former category. Pours clear deep red-brown with a thin off-white head. Aroma was a very promising heavy raisin/prune combination, classic doppelbock form. Flavor is a dead-ringer for Celebrator, with a rich raisin/prune malt complement leading to several layers of breads and caramel. Alcohol is nicely subdued. A stellar doppelbock concentrate.

On tap from a fresh keg. Dark brown appearance with a bit of burgundy peeking through. Aroma of caramel, toffee and brown sugar blending with the fruit. Intense, dark fruit(figs, raisins) taste compliments the rich, full-bodied flavor. Lush, well-rounded finish.

Bottle. Deep dark brown with ruby tint, with an off white head that almost instantly vanishes. Aroma is dominated by bananas, maybe a bit of roasted coffee, but each whiff is mostly a foreboding that something big and potent is about to hit you right in the face- the first sip that is. The flavor is full and malty, vanilla and chocolate, raisins and dark bread, very rich and sweet. Sticky and somewhat dry finish. This beer is a great combination of potent and subtlety, yet ready to take on any imperial stout. Numbs the tongue, as well as the body and mind. I was indeed suprised to see that I enjoyed this so much...

Tap. And what a find. Clear carmel like appearance and a lasting head. Nice malty sherry like aroma, and big. Big malt flavor, with carmel and alcohol notes. Absolutely yummy.
