Nose is a bit plummish, malt laden; sweet, crisp and refreshing, start is quite sweet, lots of malt, top is moderate in its feel to the palate. Finish is perky in its acidity, the hops are delectable in their spiciness, very dry and long lasting aftertaste, and quaffable tis true, a bit of a belly warmer to boot, well worth a try. | 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Feb 8, 2003 Updated: Feb 12, 20041996 Vintage, bottle # 9924, rated 2003 Like a few others here, I am rating a vintage bottle of the old, Reichelbrau version of this beer, which was more famous, and much stronger (10%) than the version they make today. Dark brown colour, still with good carbonation. Beautiful dark malt aroma - so well defined it's like chewing on Munich malt. Sweet, thick body. Sweet malt flavours mixed with nuts, brown bread crust. This beer was cloying when fresh, but it's perfectly fine now. Long, tasty finish. A lip-smacking dessert beer.
Fresh vintage, 9.2% version: Bright demerara brown. Aroma of brown sugar aroma w/ slight gasoline, biscuits (surprising for such a dark beer), molasses. Thick body, oily with very low carbonation. Flavours are refined but muted molasses. This is quite sweet. Straightforward, but beautiful and lingering. MikeF (528), Cleveland, Ohio, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Mar 14, 2004 Pours a near dead on cola color with a lite tan large bubble higher density head. The rather faint aroma belies the rich full flavor, nevertheless, it contains a nice blend of German malt and alcohol. Very smooth mouthfeel. Rich malty and chocolaty flavor in the beginning finishing appropriately bitter. Drinks like a meal, yet very crisp. Take your best doppelbock and crank it to eleven (not ten) and you have this wonderful Eisbock. A must try. Would make an excellent dessert beer. sethdude (604), St. Louis, Missouri, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Aug 26, 2004 Pours a wonderfully black color with a thick brown head that lends great lacing. Flavor is very big, yet incredibly smooth. Flavor is malty and sweet like maple syrup, mellowing and becoming grassy towards the end, with a notable alcohol presence, especially as beer warms. Malty as hell, but that was expected. Almost has a woody quality. Very good stuff, especially considering it was only $8 a sixer! DaSilky1 (2022), San Diego, California, USA

| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Mar 13, 2006 Bottle from Premier Gourmet, Buffalo. Nice dark mahogany colour with a small light brown head. Aroma is sweet and malty, with notes that oddly reminded me of Dr. Pepper mixed with birch beer (my two favourite soda flavours, so I mean that as a compliment!). Flavour didn’t wow me at first, but as the beer warmed, it got quite complex and more impressive - sweet and malty, some dark cherry and brown sugar, earthy - starting to remind me a bit of Brio, another of my favourite sodas - nice, warm finish, but not as hot as I expected from a 9.2% beer. This is some great stuff. badgerben (3605), Blaine, Minnesota, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jul 18, 2004 Very black color with a thin, tan head that disappears rapidly. Aroma is malty. Raisins. Smoked meats? Bacon popped to mind. The taste is very good. A deep malt lightly smoked. Slight caramel. The alcohol is disturbinly, and painfully, well hidden.
