Commercial Description:
The ice bock, also known as "Bayrisch Gefrorns", owes its discovery to a coincidence. According to the chronicles of the Kulmbacher brewery, some time around 1900 an apprentice forgot on a cold winter day to carry two barrels of bock beer into the brewery cellar. The barrels stayed outside, were covered by ice and snow and weren’t discovered until the following spring. The barrels had burst and the apprentice was reprimanded. But the carelessness was a stroke of luck because under the thick ice coat, a bock beer extract remained, strong tasting and high in alcoholic content.
Even if the dark, tasty speciality is not produced in this spectacular way anymore, the chance that gave birth to this beer became a tradition. Today this beer rarity is brewed in a modern brewing and freezing process, but the incomparable taste is still the same and can always be enjoyed in winter months.

Exits the bottle with a moderately thick pour showing off a dark brown color with burgundy highlights. Creates a 1/2" thick, dense tan colored head which slowly diminishes to a spotty film. Nose shows off aromas of brandy-soaked dark fruit cake, chocolate covered malt balls, caramel, molasses and dark brown sugar along with a hefty blast of alcohol. Palate is quite thick, sticky and oily with a moderate level of carbonation present to tame the candy-like sweet aromas. Taste is rich, sweet and very malty. Lots of raisin, fig, brandy, molasses, smoked maple syrup, and burnt dark caramel notes dance lively on the tongue. Again the 9.2% alcohol comes through to warm it all up and cut down any overwhelming sweetness. Finishes with nice noticeable semi-dry roasted malt aftertaste. Also love the prism design label. Good stuff here!!

(12 oz 9.2%)Deep, dark brown-ruby. Quick dying head, minimal lace. Sublte, complex/nuanced aroma of dark malt, plum, caramel, vinous alcohol and more. Medium bodied, pretty smooth/creamy, flavors of sweet, rich malt, raisons, caramel, slightly estery, chocolate and a slight alcohol presence which balances the sweetness a bit. A damn fine eisbock.

Bottle #15707, Dated July 11, 1996. Bottle was labelled 24%, but I'm told that was probably indicating degrees plato. Dark amber in colour, very fine white head. Bready and fruity aroma, with currant and possibly plum notes. Also some sherry and slight molasses. Very smooth mouthfeel, with flavours of raisin, molasses, fine sherry, and a pleasant vinous character. Finish was a pleasant nutty bitterness. Very nice.

Acquired via trade. This beer is dark brown/copper with a thin light tan head. Very little lacing. The aroma is very sweet with caramel, raisins and malt. Medium-bodied and chewy with a flavor that is very unique. It has some aspects of a Barley Wine, a Scotch Ale, and a Bock. Syrupy sweet with malt, molasses, raisins and brown sugar. There is a faint woody character at times too. The finish continues the sweetness but there is a bit of hops bitterness there. I am really unfamiliar with this style but I like it.

Smells awesome. Beautiful pour. My first Eisbock. Interesting roasted flavor. Not sure if I like this style of beer, it taste like there’s something missing. After drinking more of it, I decided I do like it...quite a bit!

sweat-slick mule-brown, with rippling sepia-copper burnished muscles; the tallow colored head is dense and substansial. red wine, cola and alcohol notes. a warming and huge triple-bock aroma, and an earthy note like plum jam on dried walrus meat. flavor is candied plums and whiskey, earl grey tea leaves and darkly carmelized apples, with enough brown bread to feed the hungry masses. as rich and full as biting into a squab-sized vodka drenched orange-chocolate raisin. these malts are loaded for bear, suitable for a stout, tho not burnt bitter, and gently smooth as a nurse's touch on a fevered brow. a couple bottles of this and i was singing verses of a wagnerian opera-- which is uncanny since i can't remember ever having heard one.

Pours a deep brown amber hue with a frothy off-white head that dies quickly. Aromas of caramel, oats, molasses, raisins and prunes. Mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with a quick fading finish. Flavors of prunes/dark fruits, a hint of cola, caramel, and some brown sugar. The alcohol is actually subued by the rich flavors.

Smallish off-white head, which subsides. Dark mahogany red body. Aroma is malty, with hints of alcohol and roastiness. Taste is dark and subtle, somewhat roasty, giving way to deep toffee-like sweetness and finally alcohol heat balanced by faint hop bitterness. A very good, and very interesting beer. I wouldn’t have that many at once (for more than one reason :), but very good.
