Commercial Description:
The ice bock, also known as "Bayrisch Gefrorns", owes its discovery to a coincidence. According to the chronicles of the Kulmbacher brewery, some time around 1900 an apprentice forgot on a cold winter day to carry two barrels of bock beer into the brewery cellar. The barrels stayed outside, were covered by ice and snow and weren’t discovered until the following spring. The barrels had burst and the apprentice was reprimanded. But the carelessness was a stroke of luck because under the thick ice coat, a bock beer extract remained, strong tasting and high in alcoholic content.
Even if the dark, tasty speciality is not produced in this spectacular way anymore, the chance that gave birth to this beer became a tradition. Today this beer rarity is brewed in a modern brewing and freezing process, but the incomparable taste is still the same and can always be enjoyed in winter months.

Bottle best before 31/12/03, dark mahogany color, with a tan head, sweet caramelized malt nose, with toasted malt, fruit cake note, candied dark fruits, hint of chocolate in the aroma follows through on a full-bodied malty palate, with a nice malted character, beautiful fruity chocolatey accent, toasted malt, hint of raisin, plum fruitiness, molasses, leading towards a sweet malty fruity finish, with the alcoholic content well hidden.

Bottle. Pours a deep brown colour. Medium tan head. Sweet malty aroma with hints of alcohol. Some hints of dried fruits too. Smooth sweet malty flavor. Hints of dark fruits and licourice too. Long malty aftertaste with some hints of bitterness.

Bottle. I was the first one to try this at Russels Restaurant in Bloomsburg, PA. I felt quite honored after finishing it! What an excellent Eisbock! Very, very full flavour. Poured a deep brown, with a small head. You don’t taste the high alcohol content right away. It is quite well rounded! This was a bit reminiscent of Samichlaus.

12 oz bottle. Pours cola brown with a fizzy cola head. Didn’t last long and barely left a ring. Lots of malty pruney aroma. Anise in there too. Raisin and caramel. More dark fruit in the flavor. More Caramel and sublte hop finish. Alcohol is very well hidden. Very tasty.

Deep brown pour, with no head. A very plummy, malty, and yeasty aroma. Pretty sweet mouthfeel with flavors reminding me of plums, and other dried fruit. Slightly cloying but not too much. A very tasty brew, great for dessert, at least for me!

Appears a dark brownish black with a small off white head that fizzles out into a tiny collar. Not a whole lot of lacing going on. Smell is bready, roasted nuts, raisins, figs, molasses, brown sugar, and black grapes. Taste is of the same sweet like aromas but it’s not cloying and the abv of 9.2% isn’t that noticable. Mouthfeel has a mild alcohol presence with a brown sugar like gummy sweetness with black grapes running along the palate leaving a nice finish. Drinkability is superb for an eisbock. One of the better ones of the style that I’ve had.

On tap at Mike and Molly’s in Champaign, IL. Enjoyed in the company of Duane and Noah last evening. A dark mahogany pour exudes odors of butterscotch, vanilla, and hazelnut. On the palate, the flavors are harmoniously accompanied by toffee, macadamia nut brittle, juniper berries, and Pedro Ximenez sherry. The lack of hops is evident, although there’s so much complexity and smoothness here that one doesn’t necessarily miss them. Well done, and kudos to Mike for putting this one on draft.
