Commercial Description:
The ice bock, also known as "Bayrisch Gefrorns", owes its discovery to a coincidence. According to the chronicles of the Kulmbacher brewery, some time around 1900 an apprentice forgot on a cold winter day to carry two barrels of bock beer into the brewery cellar. The barrels stayed outside, were covered by ice and snow and weren’t discovered until the following spring. The barrels had burst and the apprentice was reprimanded. But the carelessness was a stroke of luck because under the thick ice coat, a bock beer extract remained, strong tasting and high in alcoholic content.
Even if the dark, tasty speciality is not produced in this spectacular way anymore, the chance that gave birth to this beer became a tradition. Today this beer rarity is brewed in a modern brewing and freezing process, but the incomparable taste is still the same and can always be enjoyed in winter months.

Prominent earthy nose of port, raisen, wood and figs. Delicious taste of cherries, plums and currants. The strong alcohol content does not get in the way of the toffee and caramel notes from the malt. Excellent balance and complexity. Smooth palate. I love just smelling this stuff!

Sample at Defiant. Deep amber in color with a tan head. Aroma is very nice- alot of caramel, dark fruits, somewhat vinous, perhaps a touch of chocolate and alcohol. Taste is big and smooth, alot of caramel, dark fruits, sherry-like, with some light bready yeast, and some alcohol in the finish. Full bodied. Great stuff.

Bottle. Opaque dark brown, ruby under light, with a brown head. Sweet and mildly alcoholic nose with some candy sugar and brown sugar, mostly malty. Sweet taste is sludge-thick, great body; woody, dark malts, molasses, brown sugar, and warming alcohol. Dry with juust enough hops. Slightly sticky with a lasting aftertaste. Strong and bursting with flavor, had to forcibly slow myself down. I strongly agree with Papsoe - this has a lot in common with a trappist.

Nose is like sweet malt extract. Taste is very rich, almost too sweet. Alcohol is very well hidden. Has a beautiful mouthful. In an odd way, this reminds me of World Wide Stout for some reason.

Yeah! Beer field trip in Köln. Draught (lucky me) at the biermuseum. Coffee and chocolate in the aroma. Thich beige head, dark cola colour. The taste is extreme! Thick, oily, fluffy at the same time. Notes of malt and dark bread. Looooong finish.

Poured a dark stained oak with thin tan head. The aroma was of sweet malts, cherry fruitiness, a bit of alcohol and a hint of caramel sweetness. The flavor is very similar to the aroma. Starts with a thick dark fruity sweetness and sweet caramel. Then the malts fade and the fruitiness takes on a complexity with apple and date notes. The beer taste ends sweet, fruity, caramel, a tad nutty and some alcohol warmth.
