Commercial Description:
The ice bock, also known as "Bayrisch Gefrorns", owes its discovery to a coincidence. According to the chronicles of the Kulmbacher brewery, some time around 1900 an apprentice forgot on a cold winter day to carry two barrels of bock beer into the brewery cellar. The barrels stayed outside, were covered by ice and snow and weren’t discovered until the following spring. The barrels had burst and the apprentice was reprimanded. But the carelessness was a stroke of luck because under the thick ice coat, a bock beer extract remained, strong tasting and high in alcoholic content.
Even if the dark, tasty speciality is not produced in this spectacular way anymore, the chance that gave birth to this beer became a tradition. Today this beer rarity is brewed in a modern brewing and freezing process, but the incomparable taste is still the same and can always be enjoyed in winter months.

Creamy 2-finger tan head atop a black pour. Caramle malty aroma mixed with slight coffee and a light floral hoppiness. Full bodied mouth feel. Hints of maple syrup, toasty malt flavor. High abv well hidden throughtout. An excellent beer.

Pours a dark brown with not a lot of head. Has hints of raisins, chocolate, other sweet fruits. Has a roasted malt flavor. Very good aftertaste of brown sugar and molasses. Wish I could find some more.

Location: 12 oz bottle from Wine and Beer Westpark, 12/8/09

Aroma: Sweet nose consisting mostly of caramel, toffee, and dark fruits with some dough and earth
Appearance: Clearish brown color with a slight red hue with a dense, quickly dissipating tan head
Flavor: Taste is relatively sweet with a big malty flavor, similar to the nose, some alcohol in the end palate
Palate: Full bodied and rich, this beer has a nice mouthfeel and a mild alcohol burn
Overall Impression: My first Eisbock rating! This is a darn tasty beer. I really liked this one quite a bit. I have to admit I didn’t really know much about this style, but I like it. A really nice beer for sure with a pretty cool (no pun intended) back-story.

( 12oz bottle thanks to mar) pours clear medium brown, head that fades to thin ring, and great lacing. Nose of alcohol, tobacco, vanilla, rum, dried fruit, and chocolate. Taste is very flavorful, chocolate, creamy, dried fruit, alcohol, and rum soaked raisins. Nice thick creamy mouthfeel and delicious.

Bottle. Dark brown. large white head. Sweet aroma of raisins, dried fruit, alcohol. The beer was full bodied and strong with hints of alcohol. Tasted raisins, malt, dried fruit, some coffee and brown sugar. Sweet it was, but in a good way. Aftertaste was long and warming. A good beer!

This poured easy and tasted even better. Aroma was sweet like molasses and flavor was smooth and nutty. Low carbonation and easy to drink. Maybe the alchol content is higher but I couldn’t tell by the taste. A treat!
