Commercial Description:
The ice bock, also known as "Bayrisch Gefrorns", owes its discovery to a coincidence. According to the chronicles of the Kulmbacher brewery, some time around 1900 an apprentice forgot on a cold winter day to carry two barrels of bock beer into the brewery cellar. The barrels stayed outside, were covered by ice and snow and weren’t discovered until the following spring. The barrels had burst and the apprentice was reprimanded. But the carelessness was a stroke of luck because under the thick ice coat, a bock beer extract remained, strong tasting and high in alcoholic content.
Even if the dark, tasty speciality is not produced in this spectacular way anymore, the chance that gave birth to this beer became a tradition. Today this beer rarity is brewed in a modern brewing and freezing process, but the incomparable taste is still the same and can always be enjoyed in winter months.

Pours a dark red maroon, almost glowing, with a small off brown head which hugs the sides of the glass. Smells of rich, sweet malts, alot of dark fruit, berries, grapes, and a little apple. The taste is very fruity, with a syrupy mouthfeel, rich malts, with a hint of some cinnamon too. The caramel is big in the finish, which turns into sweet fruit. Much is the same in the aftertaste. Killer brew.

Poured a deep iced-tea like brown with a 1/4" head that slowly receded to form a thin ring around the top. Beer was lightly carbonated, and had an aroma consisting of raisins, dates, cocoa, and some alcohol. Roasted malts were very pleasant in the taste, and were well-blended with some dark fruit, vanilla, and alcohol. Smooth, non-cloying mouthfeel. Alcohol comes through as the beer warms. The beer is warm all the way down, with roasted malts in the aftertaste. This is a big and well-crafted beer!

Pours a dark brown with mahogany ho\ighlights. Thin but creamy tan head. Smells of rich dark malt. Muted sweet raisin and vanilla. Sweetish. Tastes of caramel and toffee. Raisins abd plum. Lightly sour. All flavors a bit muted so not very overpowering. Big in the mouth though. Sticky but again muted enough so as not to be cloying. Sneaky smooth for 9.2 ABV. Pretty tasty stuff.

11.2 oz. bottle. Poured a deep clear ruby which can only be seen when held to sunlight. Thick, luscious head. I would have rated appearance a 5 except the head was gone before mid-glass. Really nice aroma of malt, barrel syrup, dates and figs. Dates, figs and caramel noted in the flavor with a warming alcohol finish. Sweet, smooth, almost silky mouthfeel. As the beer warms, the alcohol becomes more pronounced as do the sugary flavors. I actually preferred this beer ice cold and liked it less as it warmed. Very tasty stuff.

[bottle] Pours dark brown in color with a bubbling, tan head. Aroma is sweet, with elements of rapsberry fruit and alcohol. Flavors are pretty straight-up, malty and sweet, with some deep almost smokey complexity. Alcohol is warming, but not too intense. Great stuff, overall.

Dark auburn purplish color. No head at all. Aroma is faint. I’m only able to pick up a bit of maltiness. Notable carbonation on palate. Complex array of flavors. Toasty syrupy maltiness with plum. Hoppy balance at the end.

deep red/garnet color with a small, yet full bubbly tan head. smells of alcohol, deep fruits, prunes, plums and dark chocolate. tastes of chocolate, alcohol, egg, raisins and plum. a bit of a viscous mouthfeel. some florals in the background. very complex but not necessarily well balanced or tasty. but interesting.
