Commercial Description:
The ice bock, also known as "Bayrisch Gefrorns", owes its discovery to a coincidence. According to the chronicles of the Kulmbacher brewery, some time around 1900 an apprentice forgot on a cold winter day to carry two barrels of bock beer into the brewery cellar. The barrels stayed outside, were covered by ice and snow and weren’t discovered until the following spring. The barrels had burst and the apprentice was reprimanded. But the carelessness was a stroke of luck because under the thick ice coat, a bock beer extract remained, strong tasting and high in alcoholic content.
Even if the dark, tasty speciality is not produced in this spectacular way anymore, the chance that gave birth to this beer became a tradition. Today this beer rarity is brewed in a modern brewing and freezing process, but the incomparable taste is still the same and can always be enjoyed in winter months.

Rich, thanks. This poured dark, with a foamy rich tan head. On the pour there seems a lot of carbination. The nose has caramel and roasted malts. The taste, Wow, Raisins and malts, good full mouth feel, Bitter end, this is a quality brew.

Brilliant clear copper with a brown head, poor retention. Reasonably soft aroma of alcohol, toffee and oak. The flavour is very strong, alcohol, oak, whiskey and brown sugar. Very very alcoholic but amazingly smooth. The carbonation is perfectly light. The finish is warming and sweet. A definite sipper.

The 11.2 ounce bottle poured a clear beautiful deep garnet colored beverage with a thin fizzy off-white head that was completely diminishing and left no lacing on the glass. Typically high alcohol equals no head and this one is a whopping 9.2% by volume. The aroma was a complex sweet fruity mixture of caramel malts and dried dark fruits such as plums and raisins and dates. There was also a background note of aged leather and oak. The body was quite full with a soft carbonation and a thick, smooth texture. The flavor started out quite sweet and stayed that was. The flavor profiles followed the aromas closely. The finish was long and there was decided warmth that developed. This is a great winter warmer.

I have to admit I picked this um because the lable was flashy. Not a good flashy. It’s like a early 90’s box of alphabit cerea when they went all "futuristic"l tacky...So apon opening it, I excepted some small plastic toy I could choke on, to fall out. nata...anyhow, I did get a nice dark amber pour and a rush of sweet sugars and malts. SOme faint vinious charachteristics with some pruin. Though I didnt have a searing alchohol experience, which was nice, I did find it to be a bit too sweet. Other than that, the chewyness and taste of molasses, roasted dark malts, clove, raisin, chocolate, and a little bit more brown sugar for the tooth ache. ah, there’s the alchohol!

Bottle courtesy of HogTownHarry. Pours an incredibly bubbly clear deep ruby with a large lasting tan head -- nice! Sweet yet roasty aroma with burnt sugar, caramel, chocolate, molasses, and hops. Wonderful flavour of toasty malt, burnt brown sugar, caramel, dark fruit and more -- nice and complex. Alcohol’s well hidden. Medium to full bodied. This is fantastic stuff, not too sweet and really easy to drink, definitely one of the best Eisbocks out there.

bottle from Rich via our latest rade. a very dark brown-amber with a tan head that fades to a thin layer of creamy foam then subsides to a ring of lace as it chases its way down the glass. mildly sweet with a medium body. a well balanced brew with caramel, nuts, some chocolate and bread dough. a bit warming from the alcohol, but the alcohol is well hidden for the most part. a well crafted brew, thanks Rich for sending this one my way!

Clear, ruby brown with a thin, white cover and ring. Lots of bready pumpernickel in the aroma, along with molasses and grain. The flavour is what one would expect after experiencing the aroma: sweet cereal grains, pumpernickel like a barleywine but with more malt character, probably owing to the lagerness of this beer. No alcohol flavour, notes of german hops, and some dark malt. Medium to full body with moderate carbonation and not overly sweet. Probably the best value ever.
