Commercial Description:
The ice bock, also known as "Bayrisch Gefrorns", owes its discovery to a coincidence. According to the chronicles of the Kulmbacher brewery, some time around 1900 an apprentice forgot on a cold winter day to carry two barrels of bock beer into the brewery cellar. The barrels stayed outside, were covered by ice and snow and weren’t discovered until the following spring. The barrels had burst and the apprentice was reprimanded. But the carelessness was a stroke of luck because under the thick ice coat, a bock beer extract remained, strong tasting and high in alcoholic content.
Even if the dark, tasty speciality is not produced in this spectacular way anymore, the chance that gave birth to this beer became a tradition. Today this beer rarity is brewed in a modern brewing and freezing process, but the incomparable taste is still the same and can always be enjoyed in winter months.

The aroma was that of raisins smothered in chocolate, dried plums and cherries and some alcohol. A deep mahogony color with a light tan head that left some fair lacing. A chocolatey start that gives way to dried fruits(rasins and plums) mixed with some bitterness. The alcohol wasnt hidden all that well and there was a chalky overtone to the whole thing. It was good, but I didn’t like it as much as others have.

Pours a very dark brown with a foamy tan head. Light to sweet malty aroma. Very pleasant rich full bodied mouthfeel. Smooth mellow malty flavor. Has a pleasant Aftertaste that warms the soul.

2004: Pour is dark dark opaque brown with a thin tan head...smell is sweet, molasses, hints of oxidation, taste is sweet and rather flavorless...maybe some molasses, wood, vanilla, dark fruits, but some relatively up front oxidation....it plays well with the flavors though...

9.2% bottle. Dark brown with hints of red. Small light brown head that quickly dissapears. Aroma of raisins, malts, and bread. Chewy malty body. Hints of chocolate and licorice. Hides the alcohol very well.

Dark, dark red nearly black, very little head. aroma is malty sweet (munich), carmel and slightly alcoholic. my first thought on tating it was that it was not as thick as i had imagined. sweet, but not overly so, some chocolate, and some burnt notes. long, warm finish. pretty good for my first eisbock.

Blackish brown colour, with a small light brown head. Malty aroma. Begins with a sweet malty flavor with a touch of caramel and raisons. Finishes with a nice alcohol bite. Delicious and well balanced. Warms the stomach considerably.

wow, that’s a deep deep brown with intense aromas of caramel and brown sugar/molasses, and peat and bubble-gummy sweetness. very excellent - the flavors are extraordinarily balanced and smooth for 9.2% and despite the high alcohol content there is not any hotness or burn. not to mention it has a cool holographic label!

Pours dark dark brown, small, offwhite head. Constant tiny bubbles. Sweet, toffee aroma and flavor and some molasses or darker sugar also. Smokier towards the finish. Also, pretty dry finish. Lots of alcohol warms your gullet as it goes down. This stuff does remind me of the Celebrator Dopplebock, perhaps with less depth of flavor.
